"Why not try discovering Vienna for once from your bike seat?"

Blue skies, shining sun, and a light breeze with it too perhaps – ideal setting to discover Vienna from a different perspective – from the seat of a bicycle: a quick round tour of the Ringstraße (Ring Road) with its magnificent structures, an excursion to the Donauinsel (Danube isles), a bathing beach at the Alte Donau (Old Danube) or a discovery tour of Grinzing towards the Heurigen (local Viennese restaurants)?

Our “Cityflitzer” bikes stand ready. We’ll be glad to provide you with helmets and baskets too. Our reception keeps maps with biking trails and ready suggestions for trips or excursions. The adventure begins here!

“Vienna – Up Close and PERSONAL” – A Recommended Excursion to the southerly Vienna Woods

Even the exceedingly charming surroundings of Vienna are worth discovering. Romantic landscapes and picturesque places entice you to go on an excursion – like the southerly Viennese woods just a few kilometers away.

On this tour one should not in any case miss the Zisterzienserstift Heiligenkreuz (Cistercian Monastery of the Holy Cross). It has been standing undisturbed since its founding in the year 1133. The first monastic building was built among the Romanesque and gothic buildings about a hundred years ago. Extensions and expansions then emerged during the baroque era. The present enclosure is impressive with a wonderful cloister, a church, chapels, bell tower, a trinity column, and a unique bell chime that one can hear hourly 10 minutes before the actual hour.

Equally worth seeing as well is the nearby Jagdschloss Mayerling (Mayerling Hunting Chateau), which has become popular through its secret stories about the death of the crown prince Rudolf.

Pure partying at the Danube Island Festival

Over 3 million visitors will revel at Europe's largest free party from 22 to 24 June 2012 on Danube Island. Over 2,000 artists offer live music on multiple stages: pop, rock, hits, Latin, soul, jazz, blues, hip hop, electronic, hard rock - there are no limits to the variety on around 20 themed islands.

Once again this year, the giant open-air spectacle serves up internationally successful musicians in front of Vienna's wonderful backdrop of the Danube:
the Scottish 1980s cult band Simple Minds, famous for "Don't You (Forget About Me)", is amongst the confirmed line-up. As is Berlin band Jennifer Rostock, which will loudly defend its reputation as one of the best bands at the 29th Danube Island Festival.

Normally, as one of the best in his profession, he graces clubs around the world - now he rocks the Danube Island: DJ Antoine, the Number 1 in Switzerland. The highly praised young band Haight Ashbury brings along psychedelic folk from Glasgow. Also to be heard: the Irish singer Johnny Logan and the hip-hopper Samy Deluxe.

The performances by home-grown Austrian players are awaited with excitement: the four Danube Island Festival regulars, the men of the band Heinz aus Wien, have announced their attendance, as has Ja, Panik. For Island fans with a very different musical taste: possibly Austria's best-known hit star in the sky, who goes by the name Nik P.

In addition there is an action-and-fun island, where both watching and joining in provide a shot of adrenalin.

On the 4.5 km-long party strip, a wide range of culinary delights and accompanying drinks will be offered at the more than 250 catering stands - from juicy steaks and crispy grilled chicken to freshly drawn beer and cool cocktails. The mega fete is also considered the most peaceful festival in Europe. Nothing stands in the way of relaxed partying...

MQ Summer of Fashion

The MuseumsQuartier dedicates itself to fashion this summer. The MQ Summer of Fashion starts on 14 June and ends in September with the MQ Vienna Fashion Week. Exhibitions, fashion shows, dance performances, photographic campaigns, fashion markets, parties, workshops and exclusive tours make fashion and experience and show its connections to art.

The MQ Summer of Fashion gets under way with two exhibition openings on 14 June. The mumok presents "Reflecting Fashion" with art and fashion of the modern area, while Quartier21 casts a look at the fashion of the future with the exhibition "Technosensual". Head over afterwards to a fashion party in the mumok imperial stables. On 15 June, visitors can look forward to the first fashion show designed by the fashion college Herbststraße. Performances and a "photo machine party" are also on the program on the opening weekend.

The following fashion highlights run into the fall: Clothing from the Stone Age to the Baroque will be shown on 4 August by the historic fashion show "Laufsteg in die Vergangenheit" ("Runway to the Past") in collaboration with the Natural History Museum. A fashion mob also takes place on 8 August with the fashion show "The History of Fashion". The Austrian designer Susanne Bisovsky also puts on a fashion show on 5 September in the Kunsthalle on the occasion of her exhibition "Mit-Gift".

The fashion shows take place on a giant runway in the inner courtyard of the MuseumsQuartier. Like the comfortable seating furniture - called Enzis and Enzos - the runway can also be used to sit, lie and relax on when not being used for an event. In the Arena21 and Ovalhalle, various markets offer fashion and design to buy: such as the "Biorama Fair Fair" (13 to 15 July) with sustainable products, and a fashion blogger flea market on 21 July.

The Wien Museum on Karlsplatz offers three days of exclusive tours through its fashion depot, which is amongst one of the most extensive fashion collections in Europe and is not otherwise open to the public. The Tanzquartier is represented on 29 June with a dance performance by Lucia Glass, while the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W) offers city tours on "Architecture, Fashion & Design". For children and young adults, the Zoom Children's Museum and Dschungel Wien (theater for young audiences) organize workshops on the topic of fashion.

On the weekends, as every year, DJs provide the right weekend sound, while the boules courts also offer entertainment. The sparkling conclusion to the fashion summer is delivered by the MQ Vienna Fashion Week. Mostly Austrian design is presented in 55 fashion shows from 12 to 16 September.

VieVinum wine fair

From 2 to 4 June 2012, vinophiles from around the world meet at the VieVinum wine fair in Vienna’s Imperial Palace.

With around 500 exhibitors, the "VieVinum" is Austria's biggest wine event - both for the industry and for private wine aficionados. Every two years, wine producers, importers and distributors from around the world meet in the imperial Hofburg. The wine fair presents Austrian and international wines of first-class quality. Vintners and vintner associations from a wide range of countries and the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) offer commentated tastings and discussions.

This year's host country of the VieVinum wine fair is Croatia, which is considered an exciting newcomer to the wine industry. The Croatian vintners have positioned themselves in Europe as an independent wine nation over the past few years and are particularly known for the Graševina (Welschriesling).

City oases in summer

Summer in Vienna is best enjoyed in the open air. Numerous bars and restaurants – above all on the Danube Canal – offer the perfect place to chill out, and shorten the warm summer nights.

Just a few paces from Vienna's old city, trendy restaurants and bars along the Danube Canal provide that Riviera feeling with sandy beaches, music, cool cocktails and delicious food. Strandbar Herrmann at the Urania beckons with deckchairs, hammocks, lots of sand, and brunch at the weekend. The now traditional public viewing will be held here during the European football championship in Poland/Ukraine.

On the Pool Boat a few steps further along, an outdoor pool and refreshing drinks on the top deck are an attraction on hot summer days. In the charming Fest.Land.Bar right opposite, selected cocktails are served. The Motto am Fluss at the mooring point of the Twin City Liner is another hotspot, with every seat on the terrace occupied in summer. The outdoor area of the nearby Flex Café is also a crowd-puller in good weather.

On the opposite side of the Danube Canal, the Adria Wien and the Tel Aviv Beach, with its DJs and Israeli cuisine, are popular meeting points. Right next door is an Art Nouveau jewel by Otto Wagner: the garden of the Vienna Schützenhaus is the perfect place to enjoy the evening sun and Viennese cuisine.

Upstream at the U4 subway station Rossauer Lände is the Summer Stage. Numerous restaurants and leisure offerings provide a mix of pleasure, sport and culture, as well as relaxed view of the water.

The biggest beach club in the city is "Sand in the City" on Heumarkt. Beneath palm trees and on the finest sand, people come to play volleyball, pump iron at the fitness facilities and refresh themselves afterwards at the food stalls. DJs provide the right atmosphere during the evenings.

150 years of Vienna's city gardens

The City of Vienna’s municipal gardens department will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2012 with a special display at the Kagran School Gardens (Gartenbaumuseum) and a two day celebration in the Stadtpark.

Founded by Emperor Franz Josef I in 1862, the Stadtpark on Vienna's showpiece Ringstrasse boulevard is the oldest public park in the Austrian capital. The same year saw the birth of the organization which would assume responsibility for planning and maintaining the city's parks - a role it continues to play today. The Vienna municipal gardens department initially operated out of city hall before finally moving to its permanent home in a building next door to the Stadtpark in 1906. Today it has a workforce of 1,700 and is in charge of the upkeep of 880 parks and gardens throughout the city.

In 1911/12 the gardens department set up an orangery in the 22nd district on the other side of the Danube. The move was unusual because until then orangeries - where delicate plants such as citrus trees would be kept in tubs over winter - had been the exclusive preserve of the nobility and super rich. The Kagran Orangery was the first - and the last - municipal building of its kind. Today this piece of Austrian art nouveau architecture is home to the Kagran School Gardens. To mark the anniversary year, the historic Stadtpark of the 1870s will be recreated in miniature in an indoor park.

The celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Vienna's city gardens started right at the beginning of the year with the Flower Ball in Vienna City Hall, which this year was dedicated to the "Garden City Vienna". In the summer, there will be two whole days of celebrating in the Stadtpark: with a party for the whole family, tree-climbing, games, picnic, music and lots of information about the city's green parks and gardens.

But not all of Vienna's public green spaces fall under the remit of the department: as former imperial parks and gardens, the Augarten, Belvederegarten and Schlosspark Schönbrunn were all transferred to the Republic of Austria and redesignated Federal Gardens following the end of the monarchy in 1918.
