June 2014

“NEW WINDOWS – in Our Inner Courtyard!”

In truth – we wanted to tell you about our NEW TRIPLE-paned, thermally insulated and soundproofed and radiantly white windows in our inner courtyard!

Do YOU prefer to open your windows ALL THE WAY, or just HALFWAY or only TILTED? With our “NEW windows”, everything is simplicity itself!

Even the SUN shines down an even more radiant “smile” through these gorgeous windows!

And, by the by, it also just so happens that the entire inner courtyard façade has been newly plastered and repainted…!

“OUR GUESTS – are the BEST!”

ALL OF THE ABOVE – would not have been possible WITHOUT the patience of our guests!

Indeed, (nearly) all of the workers used their tools (almost) exclusively “on tiptoe”, spoke to each other (almost) exclusively “in whispers” and left behind (almost) no dust and dirt…

All of the workers REALLY put in a very good effort…!

However – “the GREATEST” and “the BEST” were OUR GUESTS during this time!!!

WITHOUT your abundant understanding and without the many positive comments, some things would not have been quite so easy to accomplish…

Once again, a warm “THANK YOU” to “the BEST” guests!

OUR TERRACE” – Radiant in its NEW “Décor”…!

- Radiant, colourful flowers and shade-giving cherry laurel…

- New terrace tables, cosy chairs and many-coloured seat cushions

- Large sunshades and comfortable sunbeds

- So WHEN will YOU enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine in our tranquil inner courtyard…?

Masterful drawings

Some of the Leopold Museum's great treasures are its works on paper. A hundred master drawings are the focus of an exhibition starting in May.

The Leopold Museum owns around 3,400 works on paper, above all watercolors and drawings. The exhibition "Line and Form" shows 100 outstanding examples of masterful drawing art of the 19th and 20th centuries. The best drawers of their time are presented, including Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Alfred Kubin.

Other focal points of the show include works by artists whose drawing skills are often overshadowed by their painting work, such as Albin Egger-Lienz, Hans Böhler and Anton Kolig, as well as draft drawings for the Wiener Werkstätte.

Danube Island Festival

Europe’s biggest open-air event attracts around three million visitors to Vienna’s Danube Island each year. From June 27 to 29 there will be cabaret, great food, sports, a children’s program and, of course, numerous pop concerts. This year’s stars include Macy Gray, The Commodores and Count Basic – admission is free!

The last weekend in June sees Vienna’s Danube Island turn into a massive party scene. During a period of 600 hours, 2000 performers will present a program on 11 stages and in 19 themed areas. There will be entertainment for all ages and all tastes, and, of course, a huge number of stands to ensure that no one goes hungry.

The top acts of this 31st Danube Island Festival include music by R&B star Macy Gray, the Motown cult group The Commodores and the Austrian band Count Basic. Others include Kosheen, Genetikk, Bilderbuch and I-Wolf & The Chainreactions. Hit singer Nik P. will also be there, and Stefanie Werger, Andy Lee Lang and Ernst Molden will play more Austrian music.

Dedicated to sports activities in 2011, this little island between the U6 and Brigittenauer bridge has become a great success. It is being expanded this year and daring visitors can now jump from a height of 10 meters onto a huge air cushion, among other activities. There is also a speed climbing wall on which you have to climb up 15 meters as fast as you can.

Another novelty is the 20-meter long slackline that allows you to test your sense of balance. Advanced athletes can go onto the High Wire Garden (10 meters), where they have to overcome a number of obstacles spread over 40 meters.

Vienna Jazz Festival

The Vienna Jazz Festival is a fixed point on the annual festival circuit. High-class performers like Al Jarreau and Natalie Cole perform at such top locations as the Vienna State Opera. The reggae pioneer Jimmy Cliff is playing in open-air concerts from June 26 to July 8.

The Vienna Jazz Festival has been offering more than the eponymous cool sound for a long time. Visitors can also enjoy soul, funk, reggae and ethnic music – all at top venues.

The Vienna State Opera presents a new show by the extraordinary vocalist Al Jarreau, who is fluid in many genres and a regular audience favorite (July 3). The house on the Ring also hosts Sinead O’Connor, whose career has taken her from pop and folk to world music and jazz (July 5). Natalie Cole, daughter of the famous Nat King Cole, is also performing here. Her musical home is in jazz and R&B (July 7).

An open-air concert on the grounds of Wien Energie Fernwärme will delight audiences for several hours. This show features legends such as the reggae star Jimmy Cliff, the African jazz/funk band Osibisa and the Latina vocalist Célia Mara (July 5).

The concerts in the Arkadenhof of the Vienna City Hall with the Viennese guitarists Harri Stojka (July 7) and Dr. John & The Nite Trippers feat. Sarah Morrow (July 8) are also held outdoors.

A number of other musicians are performing at the venues Jazzland, Porgy & Bess and Miles Smiles.

The Icelandic pianist Arni Karlsson and the Slovakian guitarist Andreas Varady perform at the Arkadenhof of the Vienna City Hall on July 6. Three free concerts will be held at both Rathausplatz (Christiana Uikiza and others, July 6) and on the Summerstage (Clara Blume and others, June 27).

Kubrick: Ace director and photographer

Stanley Kubrick was not only one of the most important directors of the 20th century, but also an excellent photographer. The Bank Austria Kunstforum is now showing his pictures.

"2001: A Space Odyssey", "The Shining" and "Eyes Wide Shut" have since become film classics. Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) directed all three of them. What very few people know is that Kubrick produced over 300 photo essays from the mid-1940s onwards on assignment for the periodical "Look". Twenty of these can now be seen in the exhibition "Eyes Wide Open. Stanley Kubrick the photographer" at the Bank Austria Kunstforum.

His photo essays, like his later films, usually focus on an unusual, often lonely human fate. For example, Kubrick spends a fight day at the side of boxer Rocky Graziano, visits the young up-and-coming actress Betsy von Fürstenberg or photographs a giant circus behind the scenes. Kubrick's photographs facilitate an inference to his later work on film. In addition to the photos, original issues of "Look" magazine will also be shown in the exhibition.

Cirque du Soleil - "Kooza"

First-class acrobatic feats interwoven with fine, dramatic interludes are the trademark of the Canadian troupe Cirque du Soleil. "Kooza" is about a secret box, from which a magician conjures strange creatures with impressive abilities. From 8 May to 1 June 2014 in Vienna.

Cirque du Soleil is making a guest appearance in Vienna again. The show entitled Kooza focuses on classic circus ingredients, such as risky trapeze artists, bizarre snake people, a dangerous wheel of death and clumsy clowns.

The show's name is derived from the Sanskrit – in which "Koza" means treasure or box. A red box also stands in the center of the action. It is delivered to the "Innocent", a melancholy loner on the search for his place in the world. Out of the box jumps the magician "Trickster", who conjures up other curious colleagues: a king, a pickpocket, a tourist with a dog. They all let the "innocent one" dive into their unique worlds.

It wouldn't be Cirque du Soleil if it didn't also deal with life's big questions. Strength, weakness, fragility, humor and power are topics that are reflected in colorful imagery. Imaginative costumes and a light show provide the right, cheerfully thoughtful mood.

Vienna Pride & Rainbow Parade

This year's Vienna Pride runs from 11 to 15 June, 2014. This Pride Village will be constructed on City Hall Square this time around. The highlight of the event is the Rainbow Parade on Vienna's Ringstrasse on 14 June.

This year's Vienna Pride runs from 11 to 15 June, 2014, under the motto "Proud by Choice". This "Pride Village" will be constructed on City Hall Square this time around: a tent city in the middle of town, offering a mix of culture, show, food and information. Many of the city's gay and lesbian restaurants will provide food and drink. From 11.00 am to 10.00 pm, visitors in the raised sand beach can relax on loungers, enjoy a drink, learn about the Viennese community and dance to party music.

The highlight of Vienna Pride is the Rainbow Parade on Saturday, 14 June, 2014. On trailers, motorbikes, in carriages or on foot: gays, lesbians, drag queens, leather boys, transgenders and many more celebrate themselves in the Rainbow Parade and send out a signal against discrimination. Vienna's Ringstrasse will therefore be closed to traffic. The Rainbow Parade will make its way around the entire ring road this year against the flow of traffic, starting at 2.00 pm (start and end: City Hall Square). More than 100,000 visitors are expected.

Those who want to continue partying afterward will also be superbly looked after: Numerous parties at different locations will turn night into day from Saturday to Sunday.

The traditional Rainbow tours  on the history of homosexuality will be held again at the University of Vienna on Friday, 13 June. The tour will be held in German at 4.00 pm and in English at 6.00 pm.
