“EASTER – Is Just Within Your Reach!”

The winter coats, gloves, and scarves have long been packed away… For several days now – at least here in Vienna – the first snowdrops and primroses are sprouting from the ground!

Have you seen them already – our colorful primroses and narcissi and crocuses?
When you walk towards us through Wolfengasse, the first harbingers of spring will be shining towards you!
And when you open your windows, take a look at our terrace and breathe in deeply. Easter is really just within your reach!

“Get Yourself Energy!” – Is No Longer Just Everything… !

Who among us doesn’t want that too?!
Or perhaps you’d rather have a “good disposition”, be “healthy and fit”, or simply have “inner peace”?

No worries! We haven’t mixed any “colored pills” in our breakfast buffet!

But – we’ve carefully laid out some NEW tea varieties in our tea bar… so which of them have you already tried?
“Good vitality”, “healthy disposition”, or “peaceful fitness”? Or were their names a bit different?

“Do You Like Sweating in Winter?”

You won’t have to do that in summer anymore – at least in our new COMFORT guestrooms!

The renovation of our guestrooms with new air-conditioners has been completed! Our guests didn’t even notice it… That’s because our experts have worked only with velvet gloves.

How do you like to sleep then at the height of summer?
At a temperature of 30, 25, or rather 20 degrees Celsius? In our new Comfort Guestrooms, you don’t have to set the temperature – everything else will be done by our NEW air conditioners!

Jesus Christ Superstar

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera comes to the Ronacher as an Easter special for eight performances. Musical star Drew Sarich plays the roll of Jesus in this concert performance of the English version.

In the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar Judas tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus in Jerusalem. The story is about Mary Magdalene's love for Jesus, the Last Supper, King Herod's verdict and Judas' betrayal which in the end leads to Jesus' death.

Under the direction of Dennis Kozeluh, Drew Sarich (picture) assumes the role of Jesus, on his side Ana Milva Gomez plays Mary Magdalene and Mischa Mang Judas. The orchestra of the United Stages of Vienna will play the music, directed by Koen Schoots.

The cornerstone of the piece was laid in 1969 by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who was only 21 years old at the time, with their single called "Superstar." By 1971 they had developed it into a rock opera that first came out as an album and then was performed, in July 1971, as a concert in Pittsburgh. In October 1971 it premiered in New York. This was followed by Universal's filming in 1982.

Impressionism in the Albertina

From February to May, the Albertina presents over 200 pastels, watercolors and drawings by Renoir, Cézanne, van Gogh, Gauguin and many more.

The exhibition entitled "Impressionism. Pastels Watercolors Drawings" is dedicated exclusively to the works of famous artists on paper. The overarching goal is to clarify the important position held by the drawing in the creative works of the impressionists and post-impressionists. It was under these very artists that drawing achieved a status on a par with painting and pointed the way to the modern era. Above all Renoir, van Gogh and co. helped the drawing move out of its existence as a preparatory study material and thus defined it as a work of art in its own right.

The works selected for the show are based on three themed aspects: they show the different courses of training taken by the impressionists and post-impressionists, the different functions as well as the creation of drawings, which were on a par with paintings and suitable for exhibition purposes and for sale.

10 February - 13 May 2012 - Albertina

Gustav Klimt: Expectation and Fulfillment. Designs for the Mosaic Frieze at Stoclet Palais

The Austrian Museum of Applied Art / Contemporary Art (MAK) is dedicating a special exhibit to Gustav Klimt's design drawings for the mosaic in the dining hall of Stoclet Palace.

The entire Stoclet Palace in Brussels is considered a work of Art Nouveau and was designed largely by Josef Hoffmann and Gustav Klimt. Klimt's nine design drawings for the mosaic with the familiar themes of "Expectation", "Fulfillment" and the "Tree of Life" were created in 1910/11. After several years of restoration work, they are now on display at the MAK. Gustav Klimt had a rough concept for how the frieze should look in detail when he began his work. Changes to his design drawings in 1:1 scale gradually gave form to the famous work of art we know today. With numerous instructions, he presented the Vienna Workshop and the Vienna Mosaic Workshop with his precise vision of the frieze. The exhibit "Gustav Klimt: Expectation and Fulfillment. Designs for the Mosaic Frieze at Stoclet Palace" attempts to reproduce Klimt's style of work. Documents authored by Klimt while he was working on the piece or that he wrote about it are placed into context with the final work and what can be seen in the frieze designs. As an accompaniment to the documentation of the newest research results and the restoration, the Stoclet family is profiled as a customer of the Vienna Workshops.21 March - 15 July 2012 - MAK - Austrian Museum of Applied Art/Contemporary Art (MAK - Österreichisches Museum für angewandte Kunst)

Gold show

A large special exhibit in the Lower Belvedere is dedicated to the precious metal gold and its use in contemporary art.

Around 200 works mainly from the 20th and 21st centuries will demonstrate the place that gold has taken in art. The exhibition begins with a portrait of a mummy from the second century BC. Pictures by Giandomenico Tiepolo and William Blake document the first use of gold in modern painting.

In contemporary art, the use of gold is not restricted to any limits regarding content form or style. Abstract, surrealistic and realistic works are presented as well as paintings, sculptures, reliefs and objects. Works by Bruno Gironcolli, Erwin Wurm, Yves Klein, Sylvie Fleury, Richard Hamilton, Emil Orlik, Franz West, Jan Fabre, Georg Baselitz and Gerhard Richter illustrate the variety of ways in which gold has been used.

March 15 - June 17, 2012 - Lower Belvedere, Orangery (Belvedere - Unteres Belvedere)
