Again this year, the 10th of April is a date to mark on the calendar for all runners. More than 40,000 people will be taking part in the 33rd Vienna City Marathon, many of whom will be travelling from abroad.
Unfortunately, we can not reduce the distance to the finish line; however, HOTEL AUSTRIA can help you replenish your strength before the start. As in previous years, this Sunday, we will lay on a special earlier breakfast buffet for all our runners for an optimal start to the day.

33. Vienna City Marathon
The Vienna City Marathon on 10 April 2016 leads 42,000 runners from 130 nations past Vienna's most beautiful sights. A million spectators along the route will provide the necessary motivation.
At the exciting sport event in 2016, there will again be competitions for participants of every age and ability. In addition to the marathon held over the classic distance, the half marathon and a relay marathon for teams of 4 people on the day of the marathon, there will also be children and young people competitions on the day before.
The starting shot will be fired at the Vienna International Centre. The route continues over the Reichsbrücke through the Prater, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2016, along the Ringstrasse, past magnificent buildings, and then from the Vienna State Opera out to Schönbrunn Palace and back again to the Ringstrasse and Prater. In 2016, the spectacular finish line area will be in front of the Burgtheater for the first time.
With the theme for the year "Theater of Emotions", the Vienna City Marathon combines the joy of life, the diversity of cultures and the social Viennese tradition of drama with sporty, emotional moments.
The VCM Carbo Loading Party is held on the Saturday before the race (9 April 2016) in the Festival Hall of Vienna City Hall. There will be delicious pasta and Viennese "Kaiserschmarrn". The VCM-Expo "Vienna Sports World" will be held in the Exhibition Center starting on 8 April. The newest trends in running sport are the perfect way to get in the mood for the race...

Princely splendor in book form
An exhibition in the Winter Palace shows how princely collections achieved world fame with the aid of magnificent publications.
Europe - and above all Vienna - is rich in important portrait galleries. But how did their fame spread in the 17th and 18th centuries? This exhibition is investigated by the exhibition "Princely glory. The power of splendor" in the Winter Palace of Prince Eugene. The magic word and the answer is "gallery works". These lavishly illustrated publications, which are considered forerunners of modern exhibition catalogs, made private art collections accessible to the general public. They had their beginnings with the book edition "Theatrum Pictorium" (Theater of Pictures) by the court painter David Teniers the Younger. He published the richly illustrated work, which bears witness to the collecting passion of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. The works of this Habsburger formed the basis of the collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien.
The exhibition in the Winter Palace presents magnificent publications, portraits by princely clients ranging from the French Sun King Louis XIV to the Austrian reformist Emperor Joseph II and high-ranking portraits from world-famous collections. Geographically, the tour through the show leads from Brussels and Paris via Vienna, Dresden, England and Germany to Russia.

Prater - history and stories
The Vienna Prater turns 250 years old in 2016. The Wien Museum presents its eventful history in an exhibition.
The Wien Museum has large collections on the Prater and also runs the Prater Museum, which is housed in the Planetarium next to the Giant Ferris Wheel. The exhibition "Off to the Prater! Viennese amusements since 1766" uses a large number of unique objects to present the history of the popular park, which was opened to the public 250 years ago.
The Wien Museum covers everything from early mass events, such as staged fireworks and the arrival of the first eateries, to the present day. And in doing so recalls numerous spectacular events and innovations in the Prater: for example, the panorama that was opened in 1801 and used a giant circular painting to give the illusion of being in a foreign city. The real heyday began in 1873 with the World Exhibition. A highpoint of the Prater's history was "Venice in Vienna": Opened in 1895, gondolas ferried visitors through a replica of the lagoon city constructed on the Kaiserwiese. The show also dealt with the dreadful times of the two world wars, which did not leave the Prater unscathed.

Klimt, Kupka, Picasso and others. Form Art
The exhibition Klimt, Kupka, Picasso and others. Form Art explores the creative hotbed that from 1900 onwards gave rise to an entire network of interrelated art.
The show is the first to illustrate the preconditions of related artistic styles within the Austro-Hungarian empire that would ultimately culminate in abstraction. Broadly considered, there are no obvious connections between Viennese FORM ART and Cubism in Prague, as both developed their distinctive characteristics at a slightly different time.
Closer scrutiny, however, reveals common foundations. These continuous threads and distinguishing traits of art in the Austro-Hungarian empire will be explored in great detail in the exhibition. By including artists’ training and the educational theories of the time, they regain their intellectual historical context. Based on this, connections emerge between artists who were previously regarded as unique (for example František Kupka) or as part of a specific movement, such as the “form artists” of the Vienna Secession, Prague Cubism or Viennese Kinetic art. Aspiring to a total effect and reducing artistic expression to form represent links between the “form artists” in Vienna and the Czech Cubists. Moreover, it was not only the Secessionists but also the Prague Cubists who aimed to infuse every area of life with art.
On this basis, the Prague Cubists’ affinity with French Cubism can be explained not only by a deliberate opposition to Vienna and a different generation but also by the approach to plane and form adopted in the early works by Pablo Picasso or Georges Braque.

Actionism & Modernism
A major exhibition at the mumok gets to the bottom of the commonalities between Viennese Actionism and Modernism.
The mumok, located in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier, owns the world's biggest museum collection on Viennese Actionism. The movement's representatives, which included Günter Brus, Otto Muehl and Hermann Nitsch, caused a furore with their art in the 1960s that also went international. Like Viennese Modernism before it around 1900, Viennese Actionism was also a time of optimism. The exhibition "Body, mind and taboo" aims at fathoming out how these two art eras are connected. Works by the "scandal artists" Brus, Muehl, Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler are compared with works of their equally controversial colleagues from the beginning of the century - from Richard Gerstl to Oskar Kokoschka and Koloman Moser to Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. The works on show will include Klimt's world-famous painting "Nuda Veritas".
It is no coincidence that the protagonists of Viennese Actionism adopted today's world-famous artists of the time after 1900, with their radical references to the body and breaking of taboos as well as with the their interdisciplinary and synergetic art forms, as role-models for their own art. Representational conventions and art genres were redefined as had happened around 1900; the belief in the reshaping of society through art spurred on the utopias and radical provocations against traditional systems.
