"Our Hotel AUSTRIA - Christmas Party"

After difficult weeks and months, the covid rules have allowed us to hold a Christmas party on a small scale. What better place to hold it than in our Hotel Austria breakfast room with its magnificently decorated Christmas tree and unique Advent wreath around our fountain?

Our team enjoyed a few carefree hours, gathering strength with an excellent Buffet with Austrian and Mediterranean delicacies. A magician's show made it a very "enchanting" evening that we will all remember for a long time.

"SIMBAD - Ms Vehida's cat soon to appear on TV!"

Our Mrs. VEHIDA owns a beautiful WHITE tomcat! He even gets to ride the metro! On the shoulder of his master! A lot of  passengers are totally fascinated by him. Now Simbad was even filmed by RTL in Mrs. Vehida's home, in the tramway and in the metro!

Klimt's "Lady with Fan" returns to Vienna

The last, largely completed painting by the Viennese artist icon Gustav Klimt can be seen again in Vienna after more than 100 years. The Belvedere is showing "Lady with Fan" as part of a special exhibition on the final phase of Klimt's work.

It was the last picture that Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) worked on in his studio in Vienna-Hietzing in 1917. Apart from a few details, the co-founder of the Vienna Secession was able to complete Lady with Fan before his death. It shows one of Klimt's favorite subjects – a "beautiful Viennese woman". However, not some society lady – a frequent motif in Klimt's work – but a supposedly unknown dancer, looking confidently into the distance and holding a fan in front of her upper body. In any case, this is "unadorned Klimt": because the work was never covered with the special protective layer, the varnish, usually found on oil paintings.

The painting, which has now returned to Vienna for a while for a special exhibition at the Belvedere, has a moving journey behind it. To date, the Lady with Fan was accessible to the Viennese public just one single time: in 1920, in an exhibition in today's MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna. In the meantime, the painting was in the possession of art collector Rudolf Leopold (founder of the Leopold Museum). It was exhibited in the 1980s and 1990s in Tokyo and Krakow, before it was auctioned off in New York in 1994. In the 1980s and 1990s, it was exhibited in Tokyo and Krakow, before it was auctioned off in New York in 1994. It was never explained whether its removal from Austria was even legal. In order to bring it to Vienna, the Republic of Austria granted the anonymous foreign owner immunity from prosecution.

The first part of this special exhibition focused on many of Klimt's late works. These included Lady with Fan, The Bride, Portrait of Amalie Zuckerkandl, Adam and Eve and Portrait of a Lady in White. In October 2021, a second aspect was added to the exhibition: Klimt's affinity with East Asian art styles. These exerted a fascination on him from as early as the 1890s. Chinese and Japanese art in particular also left their mark on Lady with Fan. That is evident from numerous elements: From the Chinese robe worn by the subject to the characteristic motifs on the yellow wallpaper, like the Chinese phoenix, a crane, a golden pheasant, and a lotus flower. These are motifs that are everywhere to be found in East Asian art.

Double the enjoyment on the triple anniversary

The mumok – Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna is celebrating three anniversaries all at once. For this, there are two new exhibitions: visitors to the MuseumsQuartier can look forward to the combined power of contemporary art with the large collection show "Enjoy" and a solo exhibition on Heimo Zobernig.

The mumok - museum of modern art ludwig foundation vienna is currently celebrating three of its own anniversaries: 40 years of the Ludwig Foundation (the collection of the married couple Peter and Irene Ludwig forms the core of the collection), 20 years of residence in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier, and ten years of the director Karola Kraus. Which should, of course, be celebrated. With a best-of: Enjoy – the mumok Collection in Change shows the central donations and purchases of the last decade until April 2022. The special exhibition extends almost throughout the entire building. Chronologically arranged – from classical Modernism to contemporary art.

Enjoy stands for a colorful mix: both established and up-and-coming artists, solo and group presentations. The focus is on highlighting development and changeability – of the museum, of art, and of society in general. Because the anniversary show is far more than a retrospective: it wants to offer the public a summary and an outlook all in one. New perspectives are intended to facilitate discussions, which can be used as the basis on which to design future collection and exhibition activities of the museum.
