Memorial Year 2018

2018 commemorates the founding of the First Republic in Austria one hundred years ago. And Austria's annexation to Nazi Germany 80 years ago.

The Republic of Austria is celebrating at birthday: it will turn 100 years old this year. Its founding was declared on November 12, 1918 in Parliament on the Ringstrasse boulevard (still under the name German-Austria at the time). More than 100,000 witnessed the proclamation in front of Parliament.

Almost twice as many people assembled in front of the Imperial Palace on March 15, 1938 to listen to Adolf Hitler's speech following the so-called "Anschluss", or annexation, of Austria to Nazi Germany. In the same year, the November pogrom marked an initial terrifying highpoint of Jewish persecution. This tragic chapter of Austrian history, which must never be forgotten, is also remembered in 2018.

The highlight of the memorial year will be the opening of the House of Austrian History on Heldenplatz on November 12, 2018. A first special exhibition will deal with the 100 year-old history of the Republic. From March 12, the day of Austria's "Anschluss" to Hitler Germany, a sound installation entitled "The Voices" by Susan Philipsz on Heldenplatz reminds us of the horrors of that time. Twice a day, at 12.30 pm and 6.30 pm, it will be audible for ten minutes.

Genussfestival

At the beginning of May, the Vienna Stadtpark will be turned into a place of epicurean delights: The "Genussfestival" will be a showcase for select culinary specialties from Austria.

Escargots and wine from Vienna, gray poppyseed oil from the Waldviertel, Carinthian honey, saffron from the Wachau, spicy cheese from Vorarlberg: At the Vienna Culinary Festival from 11 to 13 May 2018, Austria’s best food producers and small manufactories invite you to enjoy and taste specialties in one of the city’s most attractive parks. The 190 exhibitors in the park will be joined by numerous organic products in the “Origin Marquee” and tasting sessions offered directly by agricultural producers. A chef also serves up tasty treats in the marquee. The Culinary Festival is being held for the eleventh time in 2018.

Donaukanaltreiben

From May 31 to June 3, the four-day music, culture and food festival will draw around 30,000 visitors to Vienna's Danube Canal for the twelfth time. The city center watercourse, which is normally a popular local recreation area, becomes the stage for numerous live concerts by mostly Austrian indie bands on this long weekend.

There is a brilliantly colorful program from the Spittelau to Franzensbrücke, with free admission to around 15 venues, including the Summerstage, Strandbar Herrmann, the Grelle Forelle, the Adria Wien, the Motto am Fluss and the Pool Boat. The DJ sets, dance workshops, fashion market, sports offerings as well as market booths and food corners will evoke a vacation feeling - as, of course, will any number of live concerts by predominantly Austrian bands.

The Donaukanaltreiben is all about partying. The line-up includes bands such as Schönheitsfehler. The guys are considered pioneers of Austrian hip hop, their live performances are rare. And they bring with them their new album #gutesleben (good life). Guests from Germany: the ingenious Leoniden, a five-piece indie rock band from Kiel with a great affinity for partying.

And visitors can look forward to discovering many other musicians at the festival, as well as seeing some familiar faces: Yukno, Mickey, Cari Cari, Die Buben im Pelz, Isolation Berlin, Fuzzman, Sofa Surfers, Symphonix DJ-Set, Samt ...

The yellow Vienna Boat Taxi will transport visitors across the water to the individual locations for free. There are indoor after-show parties late at night.

Red Bull Music Festival

On May 9, 2018, the Red Bull Music Festival celebrates its premiere in the Prater: thirty Austrian acts from a wide range of musical genres perform on three stages set up on Riesenradplatz. The Club cabins of the Giant Ferris Wheel turn to the sounds of DJs. Tickets for additional exclusive cabin concerts are raffled off. – A holiday for music fans.

The new one-day festival offers an incomparable cross-section through the Austrian music landscape with its talents and icons – from the Vienna Boys Choir to Kruder & Dorfmeister and from Nazar, Seiler und Speer to Mavi Phoenix. Hence the slogan: Celebrating Sounds of Austria.

Awaiting visitors is a colorful mix of genres around the famous symbol of Vienna - the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater: a main stage on Riesenradplatz, a hiphop stage in the building of wagon 31 and an electronic stage in the Grand Autodrome.

Stage line-up: Kruder & Dorfmeister – Money Boy – Nazar – Ogris Debris – Patrick Pulsinger – T-Ser – Vienna Boys' Choir – Granada – and many more besides.

Take off to music and float above Vienna to cool sounds: 15 cabins of Vienna’s Giant Ferris Wheel become Club cabins with DJ sets. Greats such as Wolfram, Waxolutionists, Oberst & Buchner (Heimlich) and Cid Rim set the mood in the air. Visitors can join in on a hop-on-hop-off basis and ride and party along for one full revolution.

Club cabin line-up: Cid Rim, The Clonious – Kristian Davidek – Oberst & Buchner (Heimlich) – Waxolutionists (DJ-Set) – Wolfram, Stickle – LHF Squad – and many more besides.

Before the DJ sets start in the Club cabins, Austrian music greats give concerts in the Giant Ferris Wheel cabins. This needs a bit of luck, because the tickets for these special acts are drawn in contests (some require registration when purchasing a festival ticket, others can be participated in for free).

Cabin concerts line-up: Camo & Krooked – Der Nino aus Wien – Klaus Eberhartinger (EAV) – Kruder & Dorfmeister – Lea Santee, Filous – Love Hotel Band – Mavi Phoenix – Mynth – Seiler & Speer – Skero – The Crispies – and many more besides.
