Raphael’s masterpieces

The Albertina is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to the great Renaissance painter Raphael.

Together with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, Raphael (1483-1520) completes the great triumvirate of the Renaissance. His drawings made him one of the great draftsmen in art history. On display in the exhibition are 150 works - from initial sketches of ideas via detailed and compositional studies through to paintings. They are intended to explain Raphael's thinking and conceptional approach. The inventory owned by the Albertina is supplemented with loan items from world-famous museums, including the Uffizi, the Louvre, the Vatican Museums and the Royal Collection of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

Raphael was a universal genius of the High Renaissance: He was a painter and architect in Florence and Rome (including as site manager on St. Peter's Basilica) and worked on behalf of popes and princes. His works express a constant search for the balance between the imitation of nature and the ideal image. The exhibition highlights all periods of Raphael's creative work: from the early Umbrian period (to 1504) via the years in Florence (ca. 1504-1508) to the Roman period (ca. 1508-1520).

Superstar of the Baroque: Peter Paul Rubens

The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna places 120 works by Peter Paul Rubens at the center of a major exhibition.

Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a superstar even during his lifetime. He is still considered to be the most important Flemish painter of the Baroque period. The Kunsthistorisches
Museum Vienna has 40 paintings of the master and his workshop. These include intensely colorful main works filled with figures, such as the giant altar paintings for the Jesuit church in Antwerp, as well as more intimate depictions, such as the "The Fur" (an illustration of Ruben's second wife Hélène Fourment), the "Head of Medusa" or Rubens' late self-portrait.

For the exhibition "Peter Paul Rubens: The Power of Transformation", numerous international loan works (including from the Prado in Madrid and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg) were obtained, enabling more than 120 works by Rubens to be seen: Drawings, oil sketches, panel paintings and large canvases. The content focuses on the painter's creativity. Rubens understood like nobody else how to use the works of other people for his own creations. The dialog with artworks of his famous predecessors and contemporaries engaged Rubens throughout his lifetime and left its mark on his 50 years of work. The show will therefore also present sculptures from the ancient world and the Renaissance, as well as works by Titian and Caravaggio, which Rubens took as examples from which to develop his idiosyncratic and radically new visual formulas.

Dance of the Vampires

The undead bite: The creepy musical "Dance of the Vampires" by Jim Steinman and Michael Kunze can be seen in Vienna again – twenty years after the original performance. Premiere on 30 September 2017 in the Ronacher!

It's time again to dive into the secretive world of the bloodsuckers: With vampire hunter Abronsius and his assistant Alfred, audiences are taken on a journey to the murky realm of Count Krolock.

Three great musical performers can be seen in the role of Count Krolock: Drew Sarich (until mid Nov.), Mark Seibert (mid Nov. - end of Dec.) and Thomas Borchert (from Jan.).

Gripping rock ballads, furious dance scenes, opulent costumes and scenery, as well as a story full of creepy romance and dazzling humor, make Dance of the Vampires an unforgettable experience. Since its premiere in 1997, the musical has been seen by 8,5 million people in 14 countries - a considerable success story.

The musical version is based on a cutting classic: Roman Polanski's cult film "The Fearless Vampire Killer" from the year 1967.

Viennale

Austria's biggest film festival once again offers film highlights from around the world from 19 October to 2 November. An homage is dedicated to the director of the Viennale, Hans Hurch, who passed away this year. Also in focus are Soviet and new Neapolitan cinema.

Each year, the Viennale brings the latest feature, documentary and short films to Vienna from around the world. Among them are many unknowns, unusual discoveries, as well as great films that have already been shown at the film festivals in Venice, including "Hanna" by Andrea Pallaoro with Charlotte Rampling and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" by Martin McDonagh with Frances McDormand. Austrian cinema is also represented, including with Barbara Albert's movie "Licht", which has already been rapturously received at the film festival in Locarno. The Austrian actor Georg Friedrich shines in the German-Norwegian co-production "Helle Nächte" [Bright Nights].

An homage entitled "14 friends, 14 films" is dedicated to Hans Hurch, the director of the Viennale, who passed away suddenly this year in July. The special "Napoli! Napoli!" shows the creation of new Neapolitan cinema at the end of the 1980s/beginning of the 1990s, which presents a different Naples from the picture postcard idyll usually found in the movies. The retrospective "Utopia and Correction" focuses on Soviet cinema between 1926 and 1977. The Austrian silent movie star Carmen Cartellieri is also the focus of a special. The screened silent movies from the 1920s are accompanied by live music.

The Viennale is always a showplace for popular parties and premieres. These are mostly held in the festival headquarters (location to be announced).
