Secretive self-portraits

The way in which Egon Schiele completely redefined self-portraits influenced countless artists who came after him. The Albertina modern takes us on an exciting journey in the new exhibition "Schiele and his Legacy". With exhibits by artists including Maria Lassnig, Erwin Wurm Georg Baselitz, Günter Brus, and VALIE EXPORT.

Self-portraits have a fixed place in art history. They have fascinated and amazed their observers for centuries. From the Renaissance to the end of the 19th century, they stood above all for beauty and recognizability. During the Modernism period around the turn of the previous century, all that underwent fundamental change. The presentation of the individual and his or her inner being have played a central role ever since. The self-portraits by Egon Schiele (1890-1918) that we know of are a radical departure from the cult of beauty of the Vienna Secession of the Fin de Siècle.

Twenty-one of his important body and self-portraits are the starting point of the new exhibition "Schiele and his Legacy" at the Albertina modern. Schiele's works are shown in relationship to self-portraits of the generations of artists that followed.

The way in which Expressionism icon Egon Schiele once completely redefined body language, gestures, and facial expressions was groundbreaking and pioneering all at once. And that significantly influenced artists who came after him. In the exhibition of over 130 works, Schiele is juxtaposed with nine artists of the present day: Georg Baselitz, Günter Brus, Jim Dine, VALIE EXPORT, Elke Krystufek, Maria Lassnig, Arnulf Rainer, Cindy Sherman, Karin Mack, Adriana Czernin, Eva Schlegel, and Erwin Wurm. The result? A secretive trip to oneself ...

Radical female artisans

For the first time, the exhibition "Women Artists of the Wiener Werkstätte" at the MAK enables a precise look at the impressive handicrafts created by women in Vienna between 1903 and 1932.

In contrast to the many male representatives of the Wiener Werkstätte (WW, 1903-1932) – like Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser or Dagobert Peche – relatively little is known about the work of the 180 or so women who made a huge contribution to the development of Viennese handicrafts.

The MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna presents artists like Gudrun Baudisch, Vally Wieselthier, Mathilde Flögl, Paula Lustig, and Mizzi Vogl with its major spring exhibition. From the outset until its dissolution, numerous female artists were involved in the productions of the Wiener Werkstätte. During the inter-war years in particular, women and their extravagant designs – their fantastic fabric patterns or expressive ceramics – determined the look of the Viennese production community, which at the beginning of the 20th century understood how to combine art and handicrafts in a completely new way in everyday life. Their works were trendsetting and internationally renowned.

Research came up with the names of around 180 female artists, of which about half are represented in this exhibition. Highly respected at their time, these artists were largely forgotten after the end of the Wiener Werkstätte. That is now changing: with a year's delay, the first exhibition, which is consciously dedicated to the women of the WW, can take to the stage and close a gap. Until October, over 800 exhibits will provide insight into at times

Double the enjoyment on the triple anniversary

The mumok – Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna is celebrating three anniversaries all at once. For this, there are two new exhibitions: visitors to the MuseumsQuartier can look forward to the combined power of contemporary art with the large collection show "Enjoy" and a solo exhibition on Heimo Zobernig.

The mumok is currently celebrating three anniversaries: 40 years of the Ludwig Foundation (the collection of the married couple Peter and Irene Ludwig forms the core of the collection), 20 years of residence in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier, and ten years of the director Karola Kraus. Which should, of course, be celebrated. With a best-of: Enjoy – the mumok Collection in Change shows the central donations and purchases of the last decade until April 2022. The special exhibition extends almost throughout the entire building. Chronologically arranged – from classical Modernism to contemporary art.

Enjoy stands for a colorful mix: both established and up-and-coming artists, solo and group presentations. The focus is on highlighting development and changeability – of the museum, of art, and of society in general. Because the anniversary show is far more than a retrospective: it wants to offer the public a summary and an outlook all in one. New perspectives are intended to facilitate discussions, which can be used as the basis on which to design future collection and exhibition activities of the museum.

At the same time as Enjoy, a comprehensive show by and about Heimo Zobernig launches at the mumok. The Austrian artist is internationally renowned, works across a range of media, and conceived the exhibition architecture himself. With reference to selected blocks of work from past years, the focus is on his painting.

Wurm in the palace

The Geymüllerschlössel palace is showing the new series of sculptures by Erwin Wurm. The 20 surreal-looking ceramic forms by the Austrian artist provide a successful contrast to the Biedermeier palace.

Deformed clay formations have moved into the historic rooms of the Geymüllerschlössel palace – surrounded by opulent furnishings. The Biedermeier jewel in Pötzleinsdorf, in Vienna Währing, a branch of the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, continues to serve as a stage for the new series of sculptures by Austrian artist Erwin Wurm until December. "Dissolution" shows his clay sculptures created between 2018 and 2020 in a museum context for the first time.

Biedermeier ambience and exhibition objects therefore offer visitors an exciting contrast. On show are around 20 sculptures, from which individual body parts – such as fingers, lips ears and noses – protrude, while the bodies are deformed to the point of abstraction. The process behind all this takes several months because the objects have to be stored to dry before they can be fired and glazed. What’s more, further sculptures by Wurm in Carrara marble can be seen in the garden of the Geymüllerschlössel palace.
