Klaus Lechner was a great person - and "left" us way too soon....!

Floral greeting

It's hard to believe how differently flowers can be put onto canvas. An exhibition at the Belvedere now recounts the history of Viennese flower painting.

Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Koloman Moser, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Anton Romako, Hans Makart and Gerhard Richter are the most famous artists whose works can be seen in the exhibition "Say it with flowers!". Flower pictures had a strong symbolic power through the ages. In 19th century Vienna, the flower painting achieved incomparable variety, quality and significance.

Works from the late 18th to the beginning of the 20th century can be seen in the exhibition. Flower painting stands for the general development of art history and the associated liberation from the academic norm. Women like Pauline Koudelka-Schmerling or Olga Wisinger-Florian, who were initially excluded from academic training, were able to make a name for themselves in this genre for the first time.

Culture capital in fall 2018

Everything in Vienna revolves around art again in autumn 2018. A large art fair, an art week, various exhibition projects and the Long Night of Museums turn Vienna into the place to be, especially for fans of contemporary art from around the world.

From September 27 to 30, 2018, the art fair viennacontemporary presents contemporary art with a focus on Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe in the Marx Halle in the 3rd district. Around 100 galleries and institutions from 23 countries are represented, and there's also a supporting program with performances, special exhibitions and talks with artists. The new program item "Explorations" shows curated booth presentations at selected galleries.

International curators show exhibitions of contemporary art in selected galleries across Vienna: That's the concept of curated by_vienna, which runs from September 14 to October 13, 2018. The main topic of this year’s festival focuses on the city of Vienna itself – with its historic and present-day potentials in the area of contemporary art. By contrast, Parallel Vienna presents divergent positions of young and established contemporary art from September 25 to 30, 2018.

During the Long Night of Museums (6 October) a single ticket acts as a passe-partout for around 100 Viennese museums, galleries and cultural institutions between 6pm and 1am. In addition to exhibitions and art shows, the event also features discussions with artists, readings and live music. The Long Night ticket also acts as a free pass for the special shuttle bus and the Viennese public transportation network.

Finally, the Vienna Art Week from November 19 to 25, 2018 also serves up a full art program under the slogan "Promising Paradise": Visitors can look forward to exhibitions, panel discussions, lectures, talks with artists, special guided tours, installations, interventions and performances.

Bodyguard

"Bodyguard - The Musical" is coming to Vienna in September 2018. The German stage version of the 90s movie hit brings glamor and romance to the stage at the Ronacher - with the fantastic original songs in English.

The huge success of the 2012 musical - like that of the 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner - is mostly based on the world-famous songs. The film's soundtrack won a Grammy Award. The title song I Will Always Love You went on to become one of the biggest hits. With over 45 million recordings sold, the Bodyguard is the most successful film music album of all time.

The musical adaptation by Oscar winner Alex Dinelaris created a stage version that is the movie's equal in terms of glamor, excitement and romance. In the German-language production (Austrian premiere!), the songs are sung in English - a moving live experience. A number of Whitney Houston hits that are not included in the film soundtrack provide that gooseflesh feeling in the musical: One Moment in Time, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, I Have Nothing, Saving All My Love and several others.

The cast is chosen: the singer, dancer and actress Patricia Meeden will perform the vocally powerful soul diva Rachel. Her bodyguard Frank will be embodied by film and TV star Jo Weil. Musical actress Ana Milva Gomes (Mozart!, Mamma Mia, Sister Act, …) slips into the role of Rachel's sister Nicki.

The musical tells the love story of superstar Rachel Marron and her bodyguard Frank Farmer. The former secret agent is appointed to protect the superstar from an unknown stalker - only against her will. Neither the glittering soul diva nor her watchful bodyguard are ready to make compromises - until what nobody had expected happens: the two of them fall in love with one other.

Buskers Festival

The international street art festival is being held on Karlsplatz for the eighth time from 7 to 9 September. Artists from around the world show off their skills - from music to fire shows and acrobatics.

Karlsplatz belongs to the street artists for a whole weekend from 7 to 9 September. Around 100 performances can be watched at the Buskers Festival. Numerous groups of artists from around the world present their wide-ranging repertoire at the free open-air spectacle. Musicians and drummers perform here, as do fire artists, acrobats, mime artists, jugglers and magicians.

A food area and a small market with colorful sales booths are a great place to go for a stroll and pass the time. During the day, interested visitors can participate in various workshops (juggling, graffiti, upcyling, etc.). There's also a special program for children.

When peace returns to Karlsplatz on Saturday evening, the partying continues at the after-party in Club Schwarzberg.
