The Russians are coming

Guests in Vienna: The Hermitage in St. Petersburg shows fourteen masterpieces in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna.

Botticelli, Tintoretto, Rembrandt and van Dyck are just four of the big names whose works have found their way from St. Petersburg to Vienna and will be on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (KHM) this summer. Of course, works by these gentlemen are on permanent display in the KHM anyway. But in the context of the exhibition "The Hermitage as Guest", fourteen Viennese paintings are juxtaposed with those of the world-famous art collection of Catherine the Great (1729-1796). The show thus offers an overview of European painting history from the Renaissance to Early Classicism.

The exhibition is introduced by two religious Renaissance works by Sandro Botticelli and Albrecht Altdorfer. Important paintings by the Holbein brothers, Bartholomäus Spranger, and Hans von Aachen come together from the northern art landscapes. Paintings by Nicholas Poussin and Bernardo Strozzi date back to the first decades of the Roman Baroque. The "Golden Age" of Dutch and Flemish art is represented by Rembrandt, Franz Hals, Jan Steen, Rubens and van Dyck. Finally, with Thomas Gainsborough and Philipp Hackert, artists of English and Prussian origin can be seen.

Both the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the KHM have world-famous picture galleries. The Russian tsars and the Habsburg emperors preferred to collect paintings with historical subjects or themes of classical mythology. A special focus of the exhibition is also on the staging of personalities.

ImPulsTanz Festival

Europe's biggest dance festival - ImPulsTanz - turns Vienna into a dance hotstpot from July 12: with international highlights, innovations from the young scene and notable new productions on numerous Viennese stages. Performers include: Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker, Marie Chouinard and Meg Stuart.

On the city's major stages, the 4-week ImPulsTanz festival presents the diversity of contemporary dance and performance art: with often daring premiers and top-flight classics by, among others, Mark Tompkins and Salva Sanchis.

At the Burgtheater, the British choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker , her company Rosas and the cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras present Bach’s Cello Suites in a dance masterpiece.

Marie Chouinard is looking back on her 40-year career: She and her dance company are showing a retrospective of her solos and duets at the Volkstheater.

In an expansion of the piece solos and duets, Meg Stuart and her company Damaged Goods are also taking a look back at their own creative works at the Odeon.

Other debut performances and Austrian premieres can be expected from Chris Haring, Florentina Holzinger & Cecilia Bengolea, Anne Juren and Jan Lauwers & Needcompany.

The mumok – museum moderner kunst is presenting a successful cooperation at the interface of fine art, dance and music in the ImPulsTanz program – with the mumok exhibition Doppelleben – Bildende Künstler machen Musik and works by, among others, Ivo Dimchev and Akemi Takeya. World-class dancers support beginners and professionals, children, teens and golden agers with their knowledge at more than 200 workshops of every dance style: ballet, jazz, improv, contemporary, urban dance and much more to try out. And if that's not enough, there are DJ nights and concerts in the ImPulsTanz Festival Lounge in the Burgtheater foyer to dance to each evening.

Summa Cum Laude Youth Music Festival

1,500 young choristers and musicians from around the world come together in the musical city of Vienna. They sing and play in the most beautiful concert halls - in the Golden Hall in the Musikverein, in the MuTh and in the Konzerthaus - from 6 to 11 July.

The Summa Cum Laude Youth Music Festival brings the next international, musical generation to Vienna. It is a gathering of superlatives: choirs, orchestras and bands from Australia, Canada, Israel, China, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines,

Belgium, Hong Kong, Singapore, Ireland, Greece, Germany, Denmark and Spain make music together. The festival celebrates its twelfth year in 2018!

The young artists will also perform in the neighboring federal provinces as well as in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, Germany and Hungary. Anyone who walks through the city during the festival may chance across groups of music-loving young people, laughing, chatting and getting to know Vienna.

The first gathering takes place in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral, where all the young people come together to be musically greeted. In the days that follow, there will be public concerts in such venues as the Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus, House of Music, the Prater and at the MuTh. Music workshops will take place at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Go, listen and be amazed by the enthusiasm and professionalism of the participants! From July 7 to 9, choirs, music groups and bands will perform in pairs all day at the MuTh - the concert hall of the Vienna Boys' Choir. Right next door, the Augarten offers pure relaxation and culinary delights.

The highlight of the festival is the music competition with an international jury at the Golden Hall at Musikverein on July 8 and 9. The winners will demonstrate their considerable talent at the festive closing concert at Wiener Konzerthaus on July 11. A relaxed party is also held at Vienna City Hall after the ceremonial prize-giving.

Chamber Music Festival at Schloss Laudon

Schloss Laudon, the most beautiful moated castle in Vienna, offers the perfect setting for an atmospheric chamber music festival. Listen to the aron quartet from August 20 to 26, 2018.

Count Gideon Laudon, after whom the castle was named, was considered one of the greatest patrons of art and culture of his time, and this alone was inspiration enough for the aron quartet of Vienna to turn the chamber music festival idea into reality - 2018 for the 11th time.

The festival offers a rich selection of Classical and Romantic chamber works, as well as milestones of the 20th century repertoire: music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph

Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, Dmitri Schostakowitsch, Arnold Schoenberg and more.

Guest appearances include pianist Gottfried Wallisch, for example.

Africa Days on Danube Island

From August 10-27, the Africa Days celebrate pure joie de vivre for the fourteenth time in Vienna. Captivating rhythms, imaginative costumes and delicious food transform Danube Island into a center of happiness.

African culture is about much more than the roll of drums and tribal rites. For example, it also includes fantastic music, delicious food and drink, traditional handicrafts and modern design. All of this can be enjoyed from August 10 at the Africa Days on Danube Island - for 18 days non-stop.

Two music shows are presented every evening. That makes a total of 36 live concerts on the 18 days. Here are a few tips:

•    The opening celebration will feature the finest reggae along with dub and psychedelic music by Ronald Reggae. The cosmopolitan Jahcoustix now brings its positively charged reggae to Danube Island after well over 1,000 concerts on five continents (August 10).
•    Inner Circle, the “Bad Boys of Reggae” from Jamaica are a musical highlight (Aug 15).
•    Ky-Mani Marley is the son of the reggae legend Bob Marley and has established his own reputation in the scene for quite some time (Aug 22).
•    The Italian Albrosie is one of the most sought-after artists in the reggae genre. He performs with the band Shengen Clan (Aug 23).
•    Sona Jobareth is the first woman from a West-African griot family who plays the kora – an African bridge harp (Aug 24).
•    He brought the afro sound to Europe and America in the 1970s and the “Soul Makossa” is his trademark: Manu Dibango (Aug 25).
•    The South-African band Freshlyground with lead singer Zolani Nahola is a particularly great experience live.

To keep hunger at bay during the day, head for the Sahara tent and the huge African Bazaar, which offers a wide variety of regional dishes. There's also all sorts of jewelry and handicrafts to rummage through there. You can take home of a piece of

Africa with you in the form of a typical African hairstyle or brightly colored clothing.
