Music Film Festival at City Hall Square

Starting on June 29, Vienna's City Hall Square will once again become a popular meeting place for night owls and music lovers for 65 days: at nightfall, the crowd can look forward to a select program of music ranging from opera and ballet to jazz and pop. Refreshments will be available in the form of culinary treats from around the world.

Every year, the Music Film Festival on Vienna's City Hall Square thrills 900,000 visitors, making it one of the most enticing offers in Vienna during the summer. Over 5,200 seats are available with free admission. The 300 m² open-air screen and a sound system with room simulation ensure maximum acoustic quality and pure music enjoyment on the entire square. Something to suit every taste is also offered by the music film program and the 26 or so international leading gastronomers on site.

The milestone anniversary being celebrated by the Vienna State Opera this year is the focal point of the Music Film Festival program. The opening weekend gets off to a sparkling start: the time-delayed live broadcast of the opera Aida on June 29 and the time-delayed live broadcast of the production Othello from the State Opera herald the opening of an incomparable festival season.
In addition to highlights from the world of classical music, such as Madame Butterfly, Carmen, Der Rosenkavalier or Das Land des Lächelns, there are also concert recordings by pop stars and music legends such as Ed Sheeran, Amy Winehouse, Nena, Eric Clapton and Sting.

As part of the music festival on the Rathausplatz (City Hall Square), on August 31, 2019 – exactly 70 years after its worldwide premiere – “The Third Man” will be shown on the big screen in front of Vienna’s City Hall: a fabulous opportunity for avid fans of the movie, or for anyone who has not yet seen this masterpiece.

Africa Days 2019

African art, culture and culinary arts are on the program from August 9 to 26 in full colorful splendor: during the Africa Days on Danube Island, the continent presents itself at close quarters.

For the fifteenth time, the Africa Days Vienna offer a colorful program of dance performances, concerts, exotic dishes, an African bazaar and much more. Ziggy Marley, Jo Mersa Marley, Patrice, Kaled, Hans Söllner, Jamaram, Nnenka and the group LaBrass Banda are just some of the many stage highlights. The African Royal Ballet Djiby Kouyate from Mali enchants its audience with traditional dances and harmonious singing.

The African bazaar offers the African attitude towards life you can touch: here, you'll find colorful, traditional fabrics, African fashion, masks, drums and jewelry, while foreign smells of food waft through the air. In addition to drum and dance workshops, an extensive children's program with children's make-up, creative workshops, camel and pony rides provides varied entertainment.

The organizers of this colorful event are particularly keen to show the beauty and reality of the African continent and at the same time set an example for tolerance and understanding between cultures. Under the motto "Austria for Africa", Charity Days will be held again in 2019: voluntary donations will be collected at three montages with free admission.

15th Africa Days Vienna 2019, August 9-26, 2019
Mo-Fr 2.00 pm - 12.00 midnight, Sa-Su 11.00 am - 12.00 midnight

ImPulsTanz Festival 2019

From July 12, the renowned dance festival once again presents a whole month of professional stage performances with international performing artists and innovative works by talented newcomers. A bunch of workshops get everyone dancing: beginning, professional, children and the young at heart.

The festival opens with a spectacular performance: "Macbeth" by the Austrian-born choreographer Johann Kresnik. The now 79 year-old pioneer of German dance theater has reconstructed his interpretation of the Shakespeare drama, 30 years after it premiered in Heidelberg. Dancing to the music of the multi-award-winning composer Kurt Schwertsik is the ballet ensemble of the Linz Regional Theater in front of the impressive stage set by Gottfried Helnwein.

Further highlights: the performance of the Tanztheater Wuppertal with "Masurca Fogo" by Pina Bausch, the cult figure of the international dance scene who died in 2009. ImPulsTanz co-founder Ismael Ivo and his ensemble Balé da Cidade de São Paulo collaborated with the choreographer Morena Nascimento to create the moving piece "Um Jeito de Corpo", accompanied by the music of the Brazilian singer and composer Caetano Veloso. And the Danish star choreographer and performer Mette Ingvartsen can be seen on stage with her four-part series "The Red Pieces".

International choreographers and dancers support beginners and professionals, children, teens and golden agers again at 230 workshops in the Vienna Arsenal. Whether ballet, jazz, improv, contemporary, urban dance or body parcours – there's much to try out. And if that's not enough, there are DJ nights and concerts in the ImPulsTanz Festival Lounge in the Burgtheater foyer to dance to each evening.

In addition to the Volkstheater and Burgtheater, the international dance festival will be held on large and small stages again this year. A cooperation is under way with the Leopold Museum, which is opening an entire floor for the renowned festival from mid-July to mid-August.

Theater am Spittelberg - Summer Stage

Music, theater, cabaret and comedy are so much fun, especially when the weather's warm. An ideal venue is the Summer Stage at Theater am Spittelberg in the middle of a revitalized Biedermeier district. Austrian and international artists perform there from June to September.

The Theater am Spittelberg has a very special flair - after all, it is a former Viennese "Pawlatsch theater", as covered open-air theaters in the suburbs were called. Today, it has undergone modern renovation and stands in the heart of the smart Spittelberg district near the MuseumsQuartier.

Concerts and comedy shows are held here every evening from June to September. The Summer Stage is used by popular artists of the Viennese scene as well guests from abroad, all of whom entertain the audience with Viennese songs, Balkan grooves, world music and cabaret.

The four months of daily happenings right across the city's cultures bring around 120 performances and 700 artists to the Viennese scene. The event makes the Theater am Spittelberg a cultural world living room with a family atmosphere.

Talking of family: children are very welcome here. Every Sunday there is a special program for the little ones - a colorful mixture of music, theater and clowns is offered throughout the summer.
Among the artists on the Summer Stage 2019 are the singer-songwriter Ernst Molden, who goes on a sound journey with Hans Theessink, the unconventional women's power formation Kernölamazonen, blues singer Meena Cryles, the duo Wiener Blond with Wienerlied beatbox and trendy loops, the Strotternwith their essence of Viennese, the Trio Lepschi, Der Nino aus Wien with his morbid-existentialist ballads and Folksmilch with jazz folk in a witty-creative chamber music crossover.
