Music Film Festival at City Hall Square

From 14 July to 4 September, Vienna’s City Hall Square is a vibrant meeting place for night owls who enjoy combining culture with food. Delicious dishes and music films from opera to pop guarantee perfect summer evenings - with free admission every day.

The Music Film Festival at City Hall Square is one of the most enticing offers in Vienna during the summer. Something to suit every taste is also offered by the 25 or so international leading gastronomers on site as well as by the music film program, which covers every genre and is shown on the giant open-air screen.

This year, the Music Film Festival starts on 14 July, four days after the public screening of UEFA Euro 2016, which turns City Hall Square into a hotspot from 10 June to 10 July 2016 - and not only for football fans. The games of the European Championship will be shown at this fan arena on the 100 m² LED screen. The food and drink will also pamper guests during the European Championship. And on the eight non-match days during the European Championship, pop concerts by Die Toten Hosen, Queen, Falco, Die Fantastischen Vier (Fanta4) and others will be shown - as a warm-up for the Music Film Festival.

The program of this year’s Music Film Festival makes special mention of the unforgettable musician and conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who passed away recently, and violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year.

It will be possible to watch recordings from the Metropolitan Opera in New York on a number of evenings. Productions by noteworthy orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Wiener Symphoniker and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra will also be shown. Unforgettable moments from the Waldbühne amphitheater in Berlin will also flicker across the giant screen.

Visitors can look forward to concert recordings with stars such as Lang Lang, Juan Diego Flórez, Plácido Domingo, Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann. But fans of opera and classical music aren't the only ones to get their money's worth. James Blunt, Iggy Pop, Jamie Cullum, Gregory Porter, Placebo and Iggy Pop deliver modern tones from Jazz to Rock.

A tip for jazz fans: The Jazz Frühschoppen on seven Sundays, at which Viennese jazz bands perform live and for free at lunchtime.

ImPulsTanz Festival

Europe's biggest dance festival - ImPulsTanz - turns Vienna into a dance hotstpot from 14 July: with international highlights, innovations from the young scene and notable new productions on numerous Viennese stages.

For the opening of the ImPulsTanz Festival, Maguy Marin is sending her dance company and the captivating sounds of Techno beats to the Volkstheater, which will be the setting for great dance moments this year. Marie Chouinard's star ensemble of ten dancers presents its brand-new piece Hieronymus Bosch: The Garden of Earthly Delights. Ismael Ivo creates a passionate solo evening with the cellist Dimos Gourdaroulis. Flamenco icon Israel Galván performs, accompanied by a band. Ushio Amagatsu's world-famous group Sankai Juku spins across the floor at the Volkstheater, as do Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's Compagnie Rosas and Wim Vandekeybus' stormy troupe Ultima Vez.

Other ImPulsTanz highlights are an uninhibited excursion by Ivo Dimchev into the world of opera, magical performance art by Xavier Le Roy and a solo by Benoît Lachambre. The Austrian dance scene presents exclusively premiere performances at this year's ImPulsTanz: including Chris Haring / Liquid Loft, Florentina Holzinger and Michikazu Matsune. Jan Lauwers and the Needcompany create the festival finale with The Blind Poet.

World-class dancers support beginners and professionals, children, teens and golden agers with their knowledge at 250 workshops of every dance style. And if that's not enough, there are DJ nights and concerts in the ImPulsTanz Festival Lounge in the Burgtheater foyer each evening, or parties in the casino on Schwarzenbergplatz at which to dance the night away.

125 years of the Museum of Military History

"Wars belong in a museum" is the motto of the Museum of Military History, which is celebrating its 125th birthday in 2016.

Emperor Franz Joseph opened the k.u.k. Heeresmuseum (Imperial and Royal Army Museum) in the Arsenal on 25 May 1891. The building in the Moorish-Byzantine and neo-Gothic style, constructed between 1850 and 1856 according to plans by Ludwig Foerster and Theophil Hansen, anticipated the style of Vienna's Ringstrasse. The Museum of Military History, which presents Austria's military history from the end of the 16th century up until 1945, is the oldest museum building in the city and one of the most important museums of military history in the world.

A special exhibition not only casts lights on the museum’s history but also presents its most valuable exhibits. A selection:

  • The trowel and mallet used by Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth at the laying of the museum’s cornerstone in 1856
  • A work by Egon Schiele, which he created while undertaking his military service at the Museum of Military History during the First World War
  • A portrait of Field Marshal Maximilian Freiherr von Wimpffen (1770-1854), which was cut up during looting in 1945
  • A tunic of Erwin Fussenegger (1908-1986), first general troop inspector of the Austrian Army in the Second Republic.

The final section of the special exhibition is dedicated to the latest developments in the museum's history. A redesigned group of rooms deals with the First World War. An important section also covers the period between 1918 and 1945 for the first time. Many other valuable pieces can, of course, also be seen in the museum: the oldest military aircraft from 1794 or the car in which the successor to the throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Archduchess Sophie von Hohenberg, fell victim to assassination in Sarajevo in 1914.

Hats off!

Hats had and have a meaning. An exhibition at the Wien Museum examines the symbolism of head coverings.

Head coverings served not only to protect the head but were also a visible sign of social status, political affiliation, religious orientation and identity. The exhibition "Chapeau!" at the Wien Museum looks at Viennese history from 1848 to today with the aid of selected hats and topics. The story of the 1848 revolution in particular can be told well using head coverings: The soft-brimmed, feather-adorned Calabrese hat was the symbol of the revolutionaries and was even worn by women on the barricades, while the top hat became the head covering of the traditionalists and authorities.

  • Political heads: Head coverings of the powerful and rebellious
  • Headwear of emancipation: Women and their head coverings
  • Religion on the heads: Rules for the “religious head” and the current discussion about the hijab and burka
  • Cerebral identities: Differentiating features of urban groups
  • Viennese fashion for the head: The history of Vienna as a city of hats

The exhibition also wants to tell the story of Viennese fashion: Vienna was a hat city and remains one to this day. Traditional companies such as the Mühlbauer Hutmanufaktur or the Szaszi hat salon continue to be found. And the Hetzendorf Fashion School is the only one to train milliners (hat designers) in the German-speaking countries.

1,300 young choristers and musicians from around the world come together in the musical city of Vienna. They sing and play in the most beautiful concert halls - in the Golden Hall in the Musikverein, in the MuTh and in the Konzerthaus - from 1 to 6 July.

The Summa Cum Laude Youth Music Festival brings the next international, musical generation to Vienna. Happy Birthday - the festival celebrates its tenth year in 2016!

The young artists will also perform in the neighboring federal provinces as well as in the Czech Republic and Hungary. Anyone who walks through the city during the festival may chance across groups of music-loving young people, laughing, chatting and getting to know Vienna.

The first gathering takes place in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral, where all the young people come together to be musically greeted. In the days that follow, there will be public concerts in such venues as the House of Music and in the MuTh - the concert hall of the Vienna Boys' Choir.

The highlight of the festival is the music competition with an international jury. The winners will demonstrate their considerable talent at the festive closing concert. A relaxed party is also held at Vienna City Hall after the ceremonial prize-giving.

Street Art Festival

From June to September, artists from around the world turn Vienna in a center for extraordinary art in the public domain.

The third "Cash, Cans & Candy" festival will be held in 2016. Organized by the Hilger NEXT Gallery, which is based in the Brotfabrik, internationally renowned street art artists will beautify squares in Vienna with their murals (wall pictures, wall paintings). Shepard Fairey from the USA and Peter Phobia from Austria have already confirmed their participation. Other artists who will be represented in exhibitions and actions include ROA from Belgium, Ben Frost from Australia and D*Face from the UK. The works of the previous two festivals can still be marveled at on Vienna's streets today.

The slogan of this year's festival is "Look Again! From Pop Art to Street Art" and is intended to make reference to the fact that many Street Art artists were shaped by Pop Art. Pop Art was just as critically examined to begin with as Street Art sometimes still is today.

The extensive program of "Cash, Cans & Candy" also encompasses Street Art tours (9 July, 16 July, 23 July, 3 September, 10 September), children's workshops, screen printing workshops and live actions, including by BOICUT & Peter Phobia at the Hilger NEXT Gallery from 2 June.

The current program can be found on the Facebook page of "Cash, Cans & Candy", which is updated on a regular basis.
