Music Film Festival at City Hall Square
From 30 June to 3 September, Vienna's City Hall Square is a vibrant meeting place for night owls who enjoy combining culture with food. Delicious dishes and music films from opera to pop guarantee perfect summer evenings - with free admission every day.
The Music Film Festival at City Hall Square is one of the most enticing offers in Vienna during the summer. Something to suit every taste is also offered by the 25 or so international leading gastronomers on site as well as by the music film program, which covers every genre and is shown on the giant open-air screen.
Visitors can look forward to concert recordings with stars such as Anna Netrebko, Plácido Domingo, Elina Garanca, Juan Diego Flórez, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lang Lang. The who’s who of conductors and orchestras is once again amply represented in the program: Zubin Mehta, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Simon Rattle, the Vienna Philharmonic, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, to name just a few.
Of course, fans of opera and classical music aren't the only ones to get their money's worth: Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, George Michael, Diana Krall, Depeche Mode and the Rolling Stones provide modern tones from jazz to rock.
A tip for jazz fans: The Jazz Frühschoppen on eight Sundays, at which Viennese jazz bands perform live and for free at lunchtime.

Pictures of women
An exhibition at the Leopold Museum is dedicated to the pictures of women created by well-known Austrian artists.
The works displayed in the show "Pictures of women" come entirely from the Leopold Museum's own collection and span the period from the Biedermeier to Modernism, from 1830 to 1930. Representations of women can above all be found in the genre female portraits. Going beyond explicit portraits, they frequently show the woman in traditional roles: as spouse, mother and protector of the family. Important here is the fact that representations of women over the centuries were largely determined by the male artist's view, which frequently accorded them the role of model, especially nude model. The boundaries with erotic representations were often flowing. This genre includes, for example, the famous nude drawings by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, which are also represented in the exhibition.
Rarer, on the other hand, are representations of women going about their professional activities. This also includes paintings of female artists, actresses and female singers, of which the Leopold Collection has some extraordinary examples. Despite all the male (painter) dominance, works by female artists form their own topic. On display in the section are paintings by Käthe Kollwitz, Tina Blau, Wally Wieselthier and Norbertine Bresslern-Roth.

Jewish store culture
A new exhibition at the Jewish Museum Vienna is dedicated to the emergence of Jewish shops and department stores.
The development of department stores in Vienna was part of a Europe-wide trend in the 19th century. Many of the founders came from Jewish families. The exhibition "Buy From Jews! Story of a Viennese store culture" is dedicated to this near forgotten aspect of Jewish cultural history in Vienna.
Prominent stores such as Gerngross, Zwieback, Neumann, Jacob Rothberger, Braun & Co., Goldman & Salatsch, Jungmann & Neffe and Kniže characterized Vienna's chic shopping areas on Kärntner Strasse and Mariahilfer Strasse. The show at the Jewish Museum Vienna also focuses on the department stores in the suburbs: These establishments made a significant contribution to Vienna's urban development. The turning point of the Schoa caused this business culture shaped by Viennese Jews to disappear almost completely. Nowadays, it is often only the names of a few successor companies and in rare instances the buildings themselves that serve as reminders.
The exhibits recount all of these stories from a range of perspectives, focusing not only on the operators but also on the architecture, staging, designers, customers, sellers, tailors and window dressers.

Summa Cum Laude Youth Music Festival
2,000 young choristers and musicians from around the world come together in the musical city of Vienna. They sing and play in the most beautiful concert halls - in the Golden Hall in the Musikverein, in the MuTh and in the Konzerthaus - from 7 to 12 July.
The Summa Cum Laude Youth Music Festival brings the next international, musical generation to Vienna. It is a gathering of superlatives: choirs, orchestras and symphonic bands from Australia, Canada, USA, Israel, Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines, Thailand, Denmark and Spain make music together. The festival celebrates its eleventh year in 2017!
The young artists will also perform in the neighboring federal provinces as well as in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, Germany and Hungary. Anyone who walks through the city during the festival may chance across groups of music-loving young people, laughing, chatting and getting to know Vienna.
The first gathering takes place in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral, where all the young people come together to be musically greeted. In the days that follow, there will be public concerts in such venues as the House of Music, in the Vienna Prater (for the first time!) and in the MuTh - the concert hall of the Vienna Boys' Choir.
Go, listen and be amazed by the enthusiasm and professionalism of the participants! Then enjoy a walk through the nearby baroque Augarten park.
The highlight of the festival is the music competition with an international jury at the Golden Hall at Musikverein on July 8 and 9. The winners will demonstrate their considerable talent at the festive closing concert at Wiener Konzerthaus on July 11. A relaxed party is also held at Vienna City Hall after the ceremonial prize-giving.
