„70 YEARS OF HOTEL AUSTRIA"

Entrance Hotel Austria

On 28 February 1955, Hotel AUSTRIA reopened after dramatic war events.

In 1944, an explosion occurred during the recovery of a bomb, killing several people and completely destroying the building. Reconstruction began in 1953 and was completed two years later.

Hotel AUSTRIA is not only in a GREAT location - a few minutes from St. Stephen's Cathedral. Most of all, we have the WARMEST and GREATEST team in all of Vienna!

Hotel AUSTRIA is a VERY SPECIAL "gem"!

Come and see for yourself!

„Our hotel continues operation during the renovation work"

guestroom - Hotel Austria Wien

Our historic house is once again getting a "FACELIFT"!

Starting at the end of September, our hotel façade will undergo a renovation and embellishment, and our roof will be newly covered.

Therefore, scaffolding will also "beautify" our hotel façade until December.

The usual comfort in our comfortable guest rooms, in our breakfast room and in our public areas remains of course available to you AROUND THE CLOCK!

„Autumn in Vienna"

Tree with golden leaves

When the leaves turn golden red, Vienna shows its most romantic side. Autumn in Vienna combines colourful nature with cultural highlights.

Parks and gardens such as the Prater, the Stadtpark or the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace shine brightly in red and gold. In the vineyards around Grinzing or Neustift am Walde, rustic wine gardens invite you to taste the new wine of the season. When the days get cooler, the coffee houses will tempt you with Viennese melange and sweet specialties.

At the same time, the new cultural season is kicking off with opera premieres, theatre performances and major exhibitions.

An ideal time to enjoy Vienna's nature and culture in equal measure.

Marionette Theater in Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace

The multi-award winning marionette theater in Schönbrunn Palace enchants with its hand-made puppets and authentically detailed stage sets. Here, state-of-the-art technology meets 250 years of tradition in an imperial ambience.

Throughout the year, the marionettes captivate young and old with a wide variety of changing performances from opera, operetta and musical. As a full-length adult program or in adaptations for the whole family. Today's venue has an imperial history: the predecessor theater already existed in the time of Maria Theresa.

Strauss, Mozart, musical

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart comes to life as a marionette figure and leads adults (in the long version) and children (in a shorter version) through his Magic Flute. Johann Strauss also makes an appearance in his Fledermaus for Chrildren, fitting for the Strauss anniversary year 2025, in which Vienna celebrates his 200th birthday. The plot of Johann Strauss - The Danube Waltz revolves around the Danube river, culminating in the world-famous "The Blue Danube Waltz“, danced by the legendary Danube women.

With Aladdin and the Magic Lamp or Knight Kamembert, children and adults experience a musical with marionettes as the main characters.

250-year playing tradition

The Schönbrunn Palace Marionette Theater has been continuing an old marionette play tradition since 1994: As early as 1777, Empress Maria Theresa hosted Prince Esterházy's puppet theater at Schönbrunn Palace Theater in honor of distinguished guests from Saxony.

The special puppetry technique was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2016. On worldwide tours, there have been many high awards for the equally dedicated and professional team of the Schönbrunn Palace Marionette Theater.

Carmen

stage curtain

"Love stays away, you wait and wait; when least expected, there it is!" She is said to seduce all the men with her free-spiritedness and her Spanish folklore, as she sings "Love is a rebellious bird" … Until she is killed by one of the men.

"Is Carmen really the free, independent woman we think she is, or is she rather the prisoner of the very myth of the free, independent woman? Isn’t it precisely the men who attribute this free-spiritedness to her, so that their conquest of her is all the more rewarding? Carmen tries to make decisions that go in an unexpected, unconventional direction. But is that the definition of freedom? Isn’t the consistent decision to go against convention also a kind of straitjacket?" (Lotte de Beer)
