OTTO MEETS ALBERTINA

He is one of the most well-known comedy legends in the German-speaking world: Otto Waalkes.

His serious artistic ambitions are less known. As a painter, he has made his iconic character roam art history. During his time in an artists’ housing co-op with Udo Lindenberg, Marius Müller-Westernhagen, and others, OTTO was a student at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. The ALBERTINA Museum and its collection have always fascinated him, and now OTTO has achieved his destination with an intervention in the Habsburg staterooms: on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of its founding, the museum has asked him to revisit and comment upon selected masterpieces from the Graphic Art Collection—for which he naturally pursues a tongue-in-cheek approach. Otto Waalkes thus encounters famous masterpieces owned by the ALBERTINA Museum—in a dialogue of a distinctly extra-Frisian nature.

OTTO Meets ALBERTINA invites you to rediscover the big names of art history through OTTO’s eyes: parodic appropriation as the sincerest form of homage.

23. Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn

On June 19, 2026, the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Lorenzo Viotti, will perform in front of Schönbrunn Palace for audiences around the world. The special guest will be Welsh singer Bryn Terfel. In 2026, the range of musical genres will be particularly broad: from opera, operetta, and musicals to ballet music and symphonic works. This year, the Schlosspark will be open to tens of thousands of visitors for the 23rd time – and the whole world will be watching the event on TV.

At the Summer Night Concert, the Vienna Philharmonic play open-air in the park of Schönbrunn Palace and to the familiar high standard. And have done so year after year since 2004. The open-air concert for classical music is one of the main highlights of the philharmonic year. Just like the famous New Year's Concert, with which the orchestra sends musical greetings to the world on the first day of each year.

A musical celebration with Viotti and Terfel

Maestro Lorenzo Viotti (pictured) will conduct the 2026 Summer Night Concert for the first time. Born in 1990 in Lausanne, he is a Franco-Swiss conductor and the son of conductor Marcello Viotti. After studying in Lyon and Vienna, he won the Young Conductors Award at the Salzburg Festival in 2015. Today, he is regarded as one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation.

The soloist will be the Welsh opera singer Bryn Terfel. Terfel will sing arias from Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele and from Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff, as well as the closing song from Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold and Tevye’s song from the musical Fiddler on the Roof by Jerry Bock.

Classical music for everyone

The idea of making classical music accessible to all and thereby giving a gift to all music lovers is once again the guiding principle behind this year’s Summer Night Concert. This year’s program offers a diverse and high-quality selection of well-known melodies ranging from the worlds of opera, operetta, and musicals to ballet and symphonic music. The Vienna Philharmonic hopes to appeal to as many people as possible with this wide range of musical styles.

Prater Picnic of the Wiener Symphoniker

The Wiener Symphoniker's highlight of the season at the Kaiserwiese in the Prater. For the fifth time, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra’s Prater Picnic will take place on the Kaiserwiese in the Prater, simultaneously kicking off the Vienna Cultural Summer.

The program features works by Reinhard Summerer, Agustín Lara, Georges Bizet, Teya, Leroy Anderson, Jeanine Tesori, Leonard Bernstein, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Gaetano Donizetti, Ernesto de Curtis, Francesco Cilea, Jacob Gade, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Frederick Loewe, and Nino Rota
