Klimt as a multimedia adventure

KLIMT – The Immersive Experience makes Gustav Klimt's unique work a multi-sensory experience. The new exhibition at the Marx Halle takes visitors on a 360° journey to mark the 160th birthday of the exceptional Viennese artist.

The name Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) is inseparably linked with the city of Vienna. Like almost nobody else, he stands for an incomparable style characterized by an enormous riot of colors and his wealth of ideas and aspects. The new exhibition KLIMT - The Immersive Experience at the Marx Halle now lets visitors dive deep into the world of the Viennese artist: Intricate lighting installations and projections enlarge his works several times over and really bring them to life on the walls of the exhibition rooms.

This newly conceived multimedia spectacle includes 200 of Klimt's works. An innovative 3D mapping project system makes it possible to show the works as three-dimensional objects on over 2,000 m² of exhibition space. However, the multimedia illusion this creates appears entirely real to the observers. They also experience a symbiosis of music and art because the projections are accompanied by video animations and a matching backdrop of music and sound.

Klimt main works, like "Adele Bloch-Bauer I" ("Golden Adele"), "Danaë", the "Beethoven Frieze", and, of course, "The Kiss" are as much a part of the exhibition as the architectural monuments on which Klimt worked up until his 35th birthday, and which are mechanically and holographically presented to the visitors. Not only the works, but also the extraordinary life story of the artist is dealt with in depth in the exhibition. At the end of the journey is a ten-minute Virtual Reality (VR) section, in which visitors don a VR headset that lets them look at seven of Klimt's most famous works through the eyes of the artist. This 360° experience concentrates on Klimt's "Golden Period".

KLIMT – The Immersive Experience coincides with the 160th birthday of the great artist, who was born in today's 14th district in the summer of 1862. For many people, Klimt is quite simply an Art Nouveau genius. In the Vienna around the turn of the previous century, he rose to become a pioneer of Modernism and of the Wiener Secession, which he co-founded. His influence is everywhere to be seen in the city. Many of Klimt's works, especially those from his early years, are also on permanent display in Vienna.

Tickets are available online and at the ticket counter. Due to the coronavirus measures, time slots for the exhibition must be booked. These enable access within the respective time slot, and there is no limit to the time you may spend in the exhibition.
