About 40 stalls deliberately feature high-quality Austrian products: handmade Christmas tree ornaments, ceramics, textiles, and regional culinary specialties. A contemplative atmosphere rather than a bustling fair, set against one of the most impressive backdrops a Christmas market can offer.

Christmas market "Am Hof"
One of Vienna’s oldest Christmas markets has been held on the city center’s largest square since 1842. Am Hof is considered the market for Viennese locals: This is where people meet after work for a glass of punch, while choir singing and Christmas music fill the air. The selection of classic and contemporary arts and crafts is exceptionally high-quality—ideal if you’re looking for gifts you won’t find just anywhere.

Old Viennese Christmas Market on "Freyung"
The city’s most historic market: A Christmas market was held on Freyung as early as 1772. To this day, the focus remains on handicrafts, blown-glass decorations, traditional nativity scenes, and ceramics. Festive Advent music plays daily starting at 4 p.m.—arguably the most atmospheric time to visit.

Vienna Christmas market at City Hall Square
Austria’s best-known Christmas market: A towering archway illuminated by candles welcomes visitors, with almost one hundred stalls offering gifts, Christmas decorations and warming drinks beyond. At the Vienna Ice World (Eistraum) in Rathauspark, ice skaters glide around the rink, couples search for the Heart Tree, while children can enjoy the twelve-metre-high carousel, the reindeer train and the Nativity Trail. Expect large crowds at weekends – late mornings on weekdays are considerably quieter.

Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz
Set between the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum, this is probably Vienna’s most imperial Christmas village. Around 70 stalls offering traditional arts and crafts and original gift ideas surround the Maria Theresa Monument. If you are visiting the Christmas Market at Rathausplatz, it is easy to combine the two – they are just a few minutes’ walk apart.

Christmas Magic at Schwarzenbergplatz
Around the Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain, Schwarzenbergplatz is transformed by elaborate festive lighting. Atmospheric light installations, an extensive stage programme and plenty of activities for children make this market one of Vienna’s newest Advent highlights – and a great alternative if Rathausplatz feels too crowded.

Art Advent at Karlsplatz
In front of the impressive Karlskirche, Advent takes on a different character. Instead of colourful strings of lights, you will find art installations, live craft demonstrations and live bands. Christmas market at Schönbrunn palace
The market in front of the imperial summer residence is one of the largest in Vienna and also runs for the longest period: from 6 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, daily from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm. Visitors can enjoy traditional crafts, an ice-skating rink, curling lanes, a Ferris wheel, a children’s railway and the popular craft workshop.
Getting there: U1 from Schwedenplatz to Karlsplatz, then U4 to Schönbrunn (around 25 minutes).
Christmas market at Spittelberg
More than 100 stalls line the narrow Biedermeier streets of Vienna’s 7th district. The market is run as an eco-friendly event with a strong focus on sustainable, local and organic products. 13 November–23 December, Monday–Friday 2:00–9:30 pm, Saturdays, Sundays & public holidays 11:00 am–9:30 pm.
Getting there: U1 + U3 to Volkstheater, then around 5 minutes on foot.
Winter market at Riesenradplatz
“Der Prater rockt”: children’s rides, live performances ranging from gospel and soul to pop, plus the Winterburg with free bouncy-castle fun. 20 November 2026–6 January 2027, Monday–Friday 12:00 noon–10:00 pm, Saturdays, Sundays & public holidays 11:00 am–10:00 pm.
Getting there: Take the U1 from Schwedenplatz just two stops to Praterstern – probably the quickest Christmas market excursion of all.

Romantic, student-friendly and perfect for families: a children’s railway, nostalgic carousel and two curling lanes await in Courtyard 1 of the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH). 13 November–23 December.
