Music Festival in the Konzerthaus

The International Music Festival in the Konzerthaus offers a great selection of diverse musical moments starting on 7 May 2017. One element of the festival focuses on the work of Pierre Boulez. Also at the event are classical stars such as soprano Anja Harteros, baritone Gerald Finley, violin virtuoso Joshua Bell, pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and organist Cameron Carpenter.

A top-class festival is held at the Wiener Konzerthaus every two years: The International Music Festival, now in its 38th year, with over 40 events and a festival within the festival.

Fourteen concerts are dedicated to the French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, who died in 2016 - almost all of his works will therefore be performed. Boulez felt a particular sense of attachment to the Konzerthaus all his life - he was a guest here on 41 occasions and provided audiences with some unforgettable moments. The opening concert of the Music Festival with works by Boulez and Smetana is played by the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

Great musical variety is reflected in the rest of the program: In addition to symphonic works ranging from Debussy to Mahler and Brahms (interpreted amongst others by the Wiener Symphoniker), chamber music can also be heard, such as a Early Music by Jordi Savall and his ensemble Hespèrion XXI. Virtuoso soloist and song evenings can be experienced, including with the soprano Anja Harteros, baritone Gerald Finley, pianists Rudolf Buchbinder and Pierre-Laurent Aimard as well as the unconventional organist Cameron Carpenter.

To mark the 200th anniversary of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw), the Aufspiel festival will be held on 15 June: Music will be made in all rooms and foyers of the Wiener Konzerthaus at 40 fabulous performances. Outstanding artists will be there, such as a Franz Welser-Möst, mdw graduate Elisabeth Kulman, the brass band Mnozil Brass as well as highly talented students of the mdw. – A brilliant festival with the stars of today and tomorrow.

38th International Musical Festival, 7 May - 23 June 2017

Vienna Festival 2017

From 12 May, the Vienna Festival will be showing five weeks of contemporary stage art: 44 productions from 28 countries - above all performances, as well as musical theater, drama, dance and a new club culture element. Jude Law brings Hollywood flair.

The first Vienna Festival edition of the new artistic director Tomas Zierhofer-Kin serves up a brand new program and new performance venues. He brings lots of different genres and artists to Vienna and aims at "merging performance, music, visual art and theater into a spaceship of art that connects the past and future to each other."

The Vienna Festival gets under way at Vienna's City Hall Square on 12 May. The free open-air concert has delighted thousands of people year after year and is broadcast around the world. Mistress of ceremonies and hostess of the musical show is Conchita.

In duets and unusual arrangements, together with the orchestra Wiener Symphoniker, Conchita meets some of Vienna’s most interesting musicians:

  • Harri Stojka
  • Lylit
  • Molden/Resetarits/Soyka/Wirth
  • MoZuluArt
  • Russkaja
  • Yasmo & die Klangkantine.

The three new elements include the discourse section "Academy of Unlearning", offering talks and activities with free admission.

The second element, the "Performeum", presents different performance genres on an Austrian Federal Railways site in Vienna-Favoriten, including the "House of Realness", which works with queer identity and aesthetics.

Schloss Neugebäude is the stage for "Hyperreality", a small sub-festival for club culture as the third new element. Sounds from the clubs and the electronic scene can be heard here, with guests including Holly Herndon, Merzbow and Forest Swords.

Symphonic open-air concert

On 8 May, the Wiener Symphoniker give a festival concert on Heldenplatz: The fifth Festival of Joy. The occasion is the anniversary of the capitulation of the Nazi regime in 1945. Introductory speeches are followed by a select program of music. Admission is free!

The day of liberation from National Socialism was 72 years ago: The Allied troops had won. The Second World War was finally at an end.

The Wiener Symphoniker, one of Vienna's best orchestras, and the Austrian Mauthausen Committee (MKÖ) extend an invitation - supported by other organizations - to a festival concert on the historical Heldenplatz. Host Katharina Stemberger leads through the program, which also includes speeches and the broadcast of video messages.

The universal language of music, which is at the center of the event, is intended as an expression of the commitment to democracy and freedom in Austria. Ádám Fischer conducts the Wiener Symphoniker. The event is opened with a premiere by Kurt Schwertsik: The Austrian composer created "Hier und Jetzt!" (Here and Now!) specially for the Festival of Joy. This is followed by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Ludwig van Beethoven, including the "Ode to Joy" to finish with.

The celebrated Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund has been secured as soloist. The young, prize-winning Viennese violinist Emmanuel Tjeknavorian performs Mendelssohn Bartholdy's violin concerto.
