Cats

Comeback of the velvet paw spectacle "Cats": Andrew Lloyd Webber's masterpiece conquers the Ronacher in the slightly modernized German-language original version from September 2019.

The Cats are back! It's still the same junkyard in London, the same full moon in front of Tower Bridge, the same eerily shining cat's eyes: to the unforgettable melodies of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rum Tum Tugger (Dominik Hees), the twins Mungojerry (Andrea Luca Cotti) and Rumpelteazer (Anna Carina Buchegger), the beautiful snow-white Victoria (Hannah Kenna Thomas), and Grizabella (Ana Milva Gomes), the outcast, aged diva, who performs the greatest hit of the musical with "Memory", emerge from the dark.

They all gather at the junkyard on this magical full moon night. It is the traditional Jellicle Ball, where Old Deuteronomy, the shaggy old ringleader of the cat clique, intuitively chooses one of them to disappear into the afterlife for rebirth.

Ein neuer Cast gibt die illustre Bande der Jellicle Cats – allen voran die Publikumslieblinge Ana Milva Gomes als Grizabella, Dominik Hees als Rum Tum Tugger oder Felix Martin als Gus, der Theaterkater / Bustopher Jones.

More than 73 million people in 30 countries and 16 languages worldwide have seen this exceptionally fascinating musical. The German-language premiere was held immediately after London and New York in Vienna, where it ran for seven years without a break. Now, the musical returns to Vienna and celebrates its premiere in September 2019 – as a revised original production.

Wiener Wiesn-Fest

It's almost time to get the dirndl and lederhosen out: from September 26 to October 13, the Wiener Wiesn-Fest pitches its tents on the Kaiserwiese in the Prater again. Austrian beer, local food, stars of the folk music and hit scene as well as traditional outfits make for a great atmosphere.

The ninth Wiener Wiesn-Fest, with the famous Giant Ferris Wheel as its backdrop, is set to take place in the autumn of 2019. The festival offers great entertainment in traditional Viennese style.

Three festival tents offer a different program of music. Visitors young and old can look forward to 700 hours of live music. Local beer and tasty treats ranging from Wiener Schnitzel to Brettljause (cold cuts served on a wooden plate) provide the right accompaniment to the musical enjoyment.

The Wiener Wiesn-Fest kicks things off daily at 11.30 am with a traditional pre-lunch tipple. On individual days, Austria's provinces will present their own customs, cuisine and music. Brass bands will perform alongside groups demonstrating the customs of each of the regions.

In the afternoons, there are free concerts by the hit stars Andy Borg, Udo Wenders, Roberto Blanco, Stefan Mross, Nino de Angelo, Jazz Gitti, Marc Pircher and numerous folk music bands, including Die wilden Kaiser, Die Edlseer and Die Jungen Zillertaler. Admission to the festival tents is free daily until 6.00 pm.

A party mood strikes up in the party tents from 6.30 pm. Live acts such as The Grandmas, Meilenstein, Die Lauser, Sumpfkröten, Dirndl Rocker, Schwoazstoaner and Nordwand provide the entertainment. Tickets are required for the concerts on Wednesday through Saturday. The concert tickets cost from €39 per person and can be purchased in advanced.

After last year's success, an evening of rock music ("Rock die Wiesn" on September 30) will be held in Wojnar's Emperor Marquee again, followed by an evening of cabaret (October 1). On September 26, the LGBT community celebrates the Pink Wiener Wiesn-Fest. At the Wiesn-Fete in the Gösser Marquee on October 2 and 9, DJ Maxx & Junior, Markus Becker, Timp Toupet or Almklausi and Lorenz Büffel will provide the party feeling.

Along with the three festival tents, there'll also be five Alpine chalets as well as free entertainment for all until 12.00 midnight on the festival stage in the open-air Wiesendorf.

Comeback of the hare

He hasn't been seen for ages: Albrecht Dürer's young hare. As part of a large Dürer retrospective, the Albertina is taking the world's most famous long-eared creature out of its "hutch" again for a few months.

Easter may still be some way off, but the Albertina is already retrieving the world's most famous hare from its vaults. The sensitive watercolor by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) may only be displayed in public every few years. It was last exhibited in 2016 for just seven hours. The crowds lining up to see it will be large – this near-natural likeness of a hare has lost none of its fascination over the centuries.

Of course, the hare is just one of Dürer's many impressive works to be shown as part of this exhibition. With over 140 works, the Albertina owns the world's most important collection of drawings by the master. Augmented with valuable, international works on loan, over 100 drawings, a dozen paintings, personal records and other rare documents will be presented.

This exhibition is the first time that Dürer's work has been presented so comprehensively again at the Albertina since 2003. The work of the Renaissance genius can therefore be marveled at once more in all its glory, before the sensitive works have to be returned to the high-security depot again for the coming years.

Maria Lassnig's body art

Maria Lassnig was one of the most important artists of the 20th century. To mark her 100th birthday, the Albertina is dedicating a retrospective to the Austrian painter.

Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) came to fame only late in life. Above all, she became truly well known for her "body awareness pictures", in which she transferred her body awareness to the painting. At the end of the 1940s, she was placing her own body at the focal point of her art – long before body awareness, body language and the relationship between man and woman became central themes of the international avant-garde movement.

This also included nude paintings, in which the artist portrayed herself at an advanced age. Her art was denounced during the Nazi period for being "degenerate". Maria Lassnig may have changed her style many times during her long creative period but never her topic. It is not what she sees but how she feels that becomes her picture.

"It is the art, of course, that makes me ever younger, it makes the spirit first hungry and then satisfied," said Maria Lassnig. She would have turned 100 years old in 2019. To mark the occasion, the Albertina is dedicating a comprehensive retrospective to the important artist. The exhibition "Ways of Being" shows the impressive main and key works of Lassnig, including "Du oder Ich" and "Woman Power".

Beautiful new values: Vienna Biennale for Change 2019

The year 2019 is all about change. This year's Vienna Biennale even carries the word it in its name and shows how art, design and architecture can change the world.

The festival challenges us to help shape our digital world and lets us take a peek into the future with a total of nine exhibitions and an overarching conference.

Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Director General of the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art and initiator of the Vienna Biennale, describes the times we live in as the "birth of a new Modernism". It takes courageous visions to deal with artificial intelligence, as well as for the deployment of new technologies and for new forms of coexistence, says the Biennale director.

Artificial intelligence often comes up against a lack of understanding or even rejection. Another reason, therefore, to focus on it and show what it's all about. At the exhibition Uncanny Values at the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art, we are brought closer to the potential of artificial intelligence, especially in connection with the associated technologies.

A multimedia show that seeks dialog with the visitors with 18 international artists and designers. With its exhibition project Climate change! From consumption to the sustainable quality society, the Viennese design duo EOOS provides another way of looking at how transformational design can positively counteract climate change.

We are offered these from the end of May by the Kunsthalle Wien, where the exhibition Hysterical Miningfocuses on the concept and impact of technology in the context of gender roles. Why is technology generally still coded by men, and how can we learn from or break out of this reality? The exhibition investigates the material worlds we create through technologies and attempts to give answers to the role of technology in the formation of local and global configurations of power, forms of identity, and lifestyles.

The artists' collective Time's Up of the Applied Innovation Laboratory of the University of Applied Arts Vienna agrees with this. In their project Change Was Our Only Chance, they design a future scenario that is deliberately completely removed from the typical, apocalyptic image of catastrophe. It is about experiencing the world in 2047 from an optimistic-realistic perspective in order to ultimately "show that art can intervene in social developments and help shape them", according to Gerald Bast, rector of the University of Applied Art.
