Traditional Easter decorations and artfully decorated eggs, culinary treats and a program of music await you at Vienna's Easter markets in April. There’s all sorts of entertainment for young visitors to the markets.

The Easter market in front of Schönbrunn Palace is considered to be one of the most romantic Easter markets. In front of the backdrop of the palace, 60 exhibitors offer all sorts of culinary pleasures as well as decorative Easter decorations and handicrafts from Austria. Children have fun in the Easter Bunny workshop, where they shape marzipan bunnies and make Easter flower arrangements, in the Easter nest hunt and in the Kindermuseum, while the adults enjoy the entertainment at "Jazz at the Easter Market".

Every year, at the Old Viennese Easter market on Freyung, a pretty old square in the Old City, the biggest tower of eggs in Europe is built with around 40,000 painted Easter eggs. There are also numerous Easter specialties ranging from the Osterpinze Easter bread to the roast Easter lamb, handicrafts, floristry and for the very little ones a creative Easter workshop and a puppet theater.

The Am Hof Easter Market is also fully dedicated to Easter customs with skilfully decorated eggs and flower arrangements, and also offers pretty handicrafts as well as hearty food.

At the Kalvarienberg Festival, visitors can not only look for Easter gifts and art objects but also put their own creativity to the test at a range of different art workshops. Live music and a children’s program provide additional entertainment.
 

Cirque du Soleil erects its legendary circus tent again in Vienna Neu Marx in the spring and presents "Totem", a fantastic journey through the evolution of the human being - from its amphibian origins to the modern era dream of flight.

Colorful, unique and surprising – that's what the shows of the world-famous Canadian Cirque du Soleil are known for. With Totem, star director Robert Lepage has once again succeeded in captivating audiences with spectacular and polished acrobatic numbers. Around 46 artists, singers, acrobats and musicians sing, dance, jump and fly over the originally designed stage and tell the story of humankind. The stage is reminiscent of a giant tortoise, considered by many cultures to be a symbol for the origins of life. 

Cirque du Soleil began in 1984 as a group of 20 street artists and developed into a global company based in Quebec that produces the very best in artistic entertainment. Today, Cirque du Soleil employs almost 4,000 people, including 1,400 artists from more than 50 different countries. According to its own information, more than 190 million people have seen the productions of Cirque du Soleil in around 450 cities in over 60 countries on six continents.

In his almost 60-year career as an artist, Christian Ludwig Attersee has successfully circumvented all categorizations of art history. Belvedere 21 pays tribute to his creativity with an exhibition of his early works.

Christian Ludwig Attersee is not only one of the most important painters of his generation and this country but also a passionate singer and composer, author, stage designer, performance artist, filmmaker and photographer. There is hardly an artistic form of expression that Attersee does not claim for himself. In his long career, the all-rounder has gradually leveled the artistic boundaries between pop and modernism, between free and applied art. The Belvedere 21 pays tribute to the internationally renowned painter and co-founder of "New Austrian Painting" with a comprehensive exhibition.

The exhibition on the upper floor of Belvedere 21 focuses in particular on the first 20 years of Attersee's work, in which the artist formulates the complex diversity of his entire oeuvre. Creations from numerous genres such as drawings, collages, paintings, photographic series, carpets, films, music, objects, selected product design and much more are shown. Attersee's unmistakable oeuvre is thus made accessible on a large scale and presented in a comprehensible manner.

The principality of Liechtenstein celebrates its 300th anniversary in 2019. The Albertina joins in the celebrations and presents precious works of the Prince of Liechtenstein’s collections in a major exhibition.

2019 is an important memorial year for the principality and the House of Liechtenstein: On 23 January 1719, Emperor Charles VI raised the imperial dominion of Schellenberg and the imperial earldom of Vaduz to the imperial principality of Liechtenstein. Prince Anton Florian I of Liechtenstein thus became the first sovereign. This 300 year-old event is being celebrated with a major exhibition by the Albertina in Vienna, in the city where the family lived until 1938. “Our family not only wants to collect art but also to let the general public partake in these masterpieces. Which is why we are so glad that museums around the world regularly exhibit masterpieces from the Princely Collections,” says His Serene Highness Prince Philipp of Liechtenstein.

In major exhibitions, the collections of the Prince of Liechtenstein have showed their treasures in leading museums around the world. But never before have they been accessible in their entirety to the general public in Vienna, especially following the spectacular new acquisitions of the last 15 years. The show at the Albertina thus focuses on works such as Venus by Peter Paul Rubens, the life-size bronze sculpture of Christ in Distress by Adrian de Fries, the recently acquired bronze bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, and selected treasures of the world-famous Biedermeier collection. This presentation allows the precious works of the collections and their unique quality to be experienced in a new light.

The Lower Belvedere dedicates a long overdue show to female artists whose works made a significant contribution to the art scene in Austria at the time of Vienna Modernism and the First Republic.

For women who wanted to become artists at the beginning of the 20th century, the conditions were extremely poor. They were not allowed to study at the academy and had only limited access to artist associations. This also minimized the possibilities for them to hold exhibitions. Nevertheless, some of them managed to make their presence known on the male-dominated Viennese art scene and successfully build up a career. They were active on the art scene at that time and exhibited at the Secession and in the Salon Pisko, among other places. Nevertheless, many were forgotten. The Lower Belvedere now dedicates a long overdue presentation to these courageous women.

Although in recent years the life and work of some of the then renowned female artists have been researched and presented in retrospectives, the significance of their work remains underestimated to this day and has thus scarcely been noticed. This exhibition now aims at broadening the view of Vienna Modernism and the inter-war period. The focus is on female artists who have contributed a great deal to the art of this time.

In addition to rediscovered works, which are being shown for the first time, the show pays tribute to the contributions of the now largely forgotten female artists to the art movements of Mood Impressionism, Secessionism, Expressionism, Kinetism and New Objectivity. On display are works by Ilse Bernheimer, Maria Cyrenius, Friedl Dicker, Marie Egner, Louise Fraenkel-Hahn, Helene Funke, Greta Freist, and many more.
