Our team has another CELEBRATION!

15 years ago , Mrs SONJA first started working 2-3 days per week at Hotel AUSTRIA.
She then enjoyed this work so much – and she was so good at it! – that she switched to full-time mode and has been looking after the 2nd floor ever since.

Our guests appreciate her care & thoroughness – and her colleagues especially appreciate Mrs SONJA for her CHEERFULNESS!

In Dialog with Edvard Munch

The Albertina once again draws visitors with a brilliant Munch exhibition in 2022. From February 18, over 60 works of the Norwegian painter, whose art laid the groundwork for subsequent generations, enter into dialog with seven greats of the 20th century. Among them Andy Warhol, Georg Baselitz, and Tracey Emin.

Edvard Munch (1862-1944), one of the best-known and most influential protagonists of Modernism, has another special exhibition dedicated to him in spring 2022 at the Albertina, which takes us on an exciting journey. "Edvard Munch. In Dialog" follows on from the museum's record-breaking exhibitions on Munch in 2003 and 2015.

The focus this time is on the painter's later work. Over 60 works document his oeuvre, which is often characterized by great emotions. In addition, the exhibition also aims to reinforce the importance of Munch's work for modern.

Without doubt it is mainly Munch's melancholy philosophy that left its mark on posterity. However, as the exhibition shows, his influence extends far beyond that. Munch's experimental handling of painting and printing techniques, his unique range of colors, his pigments and brushstrokes characterize painting to this day.

As part of the exhibition, seven artists of the present day – all are greats of the 20th century – enter into dialog with Edvard Munch: Georg Baselitz, Andy Warhol, Miriam Cahn, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Tracy Emin, and Jasper Johns. Their exhibited works make reference to Munch, are influenced by him or came about in the debate with him. With each artist selecting their own, very personal approach to Munch's art. On view are references to Munch's forest landscapes, his impressive portraits – and above all: intense, human emotions.

Inside the insights

The Lower Belvedere celebrates its reopening with the exhibition Dalí - Freud. An Obsession. Following the renovation work in the Baroque building, we learn what happens when psychoanalysis meets Surrealism. The focus is on two enfants terribles of the 20th century: Sigmund Freud and Salvador Dalí.

London, autumn 1938. The first and only meeting of two legends was arranged by Stefan Zweig and Edward James: between Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), the psychoanalyst who fled Vienna, and Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), the Spanish painter. A meeting that left deep tracks in art history. Dalí, a pioneer of Surrealism and ardent admirer of Freud, studied the latter's writings in the early 1920s. Influenced by his theories and perspectives, Dalí increasingly dealt with the poetics of Surrealism and subsequently developed his own unmistakable, new imagery, which went on to make him and his oeuvre world-famous.

Dalí was regularly inspired by trendsetting encounters: In addition to Freud, his muses also included the poet Federico García Lorca, the filmmaker Luis Buñuel and the histologist and Nobel Prize winner Santiago Ramón y Cajal. The artist also dealt intensively and psychoanalytically with his youth, subsequently letting his findings flow into his art.

Surrealism and psychoanalysis, two of perhaps the most important movements of the 20th century, meet each other in the exhibition "Dalí - Freud. An Obsession". Typical of both? – The subconscious and the dream play central roles here. The Lower Belvedere shows around 100 works by the great Surrealist, including paintings, sculptures, letters, periodicals, photographs, films and books, which support Freud's influence on Dalí's œuvre. Also presented are new research findings which are intended to show how surrealist art took up and cast light on the relationship.

The exhibition was already planned for autumn 2020, before the pandemic threw the program into chaos. Now the first show in the reopened Lower Belvedere marks the start to a Viennese year of art packed with highlights. The former summer residence of Prince Eugene on Rennweg, an imposing part of the Baroque palace complex of the Belvedere, opens its magnificent gates to museum visitors again following a general refurbishment. The building and its wonderful staterooms were completed in 1716 and have been brought up to date with international museum standards. The installation of a café as well as the renovation and improvement of accessibility and technology ensure a museum experiences of the very highest quality.

Vienna’s Easter Markets

Traditional Easter decorations and artfully decorated eggs, culinary treats, and a program of music await you at Vienna's Easter markets from the beginning of April. There’s all sorts of entertainment for young visitors to the markets.

The Easter market in front of Schönbrunn Palace is considered to be one of the most romantic Easter markets. In front of the Baroque backdrop of the palace, 70 exhibitors offer all sorts of culinary pleasures as well as decorative Easter decorations and handicrafts from Austria. Children have fun in the Easter Bunny workshop, where they shape marzipan bunnies and make Easter flower arrangements, and in the Schloss Schönbrunn Children's Museum, while the adults enjoy the entertainment at "Jazz at the Easter Market".

Every year, at the Old Viennese Easter market on Freyung, a pretty old square in the Old City, the biggest tower of eggs in Europe is built with around 40,000 painted Easter eggs. There are also numerous Easter specialties ranging from the Osterpinze Easter bread to the roast Easter lamb, handicrafts, floristry and for the very little ones a creative Easter workshop and a Kasperl stage (similar to Punch & Judy). The musical entertainment starts daily at 4.30 pm.

The Am Hof Easter Market is also fully dedicated to Easter customs with skilfully decorated eggs and flower arrangements, and also offers pretty handicrafts as well as hearty food.
